Objectives
During this course, the student's competence in school-age children and adolescents as well as their family's health nursing will deepen.
Upon completing the course/study module, the student
• is able to plan, implement, and evaluate the monitoring of a schoolchild's growth and development in collaboration with the child and their family
• is able to guide and support the schoolchild in making health-promoting choices
• is able to guide and support the family in schoolchild parenting and promoting healthy lifestyle
• is able to assess the need for special support and follow-up care for the schoolchild and their family in collaboration with them
• is able to sustain and promote a safe growth environment for schoolchildren in collaboration with families and other stakeholders
Content
• Family nursing in schoolchild health nursing.
• Periodic health examinations for pupils.
• Health counseling for schoolchildren (individual and group levels).
• Student welfare as a part of health nursing.
• Promotion of well-being in the school community.
• Multidisciplinary assessment of the health and safety of the school environment.
Prerequisites
The student must have completed 135 ECTS credits of nursing studies and participated in the course Nursing Care for Children, Adolescents, and People with Disabilities and The Basics of Public Health Nursing.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student
• knows the key contents of periodic health examinations for schoolchildren and can assess factors influencing a schoolchild's growth and development
• can identify the needs for promoting schoolchild health and understands the basics of guiding schoolchildren
• understands the significance of the family in supporting a schoolchild's well-being
• recognizes the need for special support for the schoolchild and their family
• identifies the importance of the growth community and environment for a schoolchild's well-being
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student
• masters the contents of periodic health examinations for schoolchildren and takes their family into considerations
• can use evidence-based information and can justify healthy choices
• can support parents in promoting a schoolchild's well-being
• can support the schoolchild and family in cases of special needs
• can contribute to creating a safe growth environment for schoolchildren in collaboration with families and other stakeholders
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student
• can comprehensively assess the situation of the schoolchild and their family and demonstrates the skills to provide individualized support
• masters individualized guidance for schoolchildren in health-promoting choices
• can provide individualized guidance to parents in promoting a schoolchild's well-being
• can provide individualized guidance to schoolchildren and families with special needs and demonstrates the skills for monitoring and follow-up care of these needs
• can sustain a safe growth environment for schoolchildren in collaboration with families and other stakeholders
