Objectives

The student
-is able to recognize the symptoms of mental health or substance abuse problems and can assess the caring needs based on these symptoms
-manages the principles of therapeutic nurse-patient relationship as well as relationship with the patient’s significant others in adult and old people specialized mental health services
-manages the nursing interventions of community care, group therapy and motivational care
-recognizes the challenging behavior of the patient and knows how to act in these situations.
-is familiar with the psychopharmacology and pharmacotherapy of the severe mental health disorders and can give patient education in these issues.
-acknowledges sustainability issues in mental health care as well as in his or hers own actions.

Content

-mental health and substance abuse problems treated in specialized care services
-professional assessment and decision-making in mental health and substance abuse nursing
-psychopharmacology and pharmacological care of the substance abuse problems
-pharmacotherapy, patient education and motivational approach
-therapeutic interaction with patients in different age groups (adults and old people) and with their significant others
-mental health nursing interventions: community care, group therapy and motivational approach
-challenging behavior

Prerequisites

At the beginning of alternative vocational studies, the student must have completed 135 credits of studies. These should include theoretical studies and orientation to practical training of the area which the student has chosen for alternative vocational studies, as well as studies in anatomy and physiology. The required area is mental health and substance abuse care.It is recommended that the student has completed the supervised practical in the area of mental health and substance abuse care.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
- Is able to assess the patient’s caring needs in specialized services, both individually and as a part of the interdisciplinary team
-recognizes the needs of support of the patient’s significant others
-knows and recognizes different aspects of the therapeutic nurse-patient interaction with patients (adults and old people) and their significant others.
-knows and recognizes different situations of the challenging behavior and knows professionals ways to act in these situations.
-knows the group and community care as well as the motivational approach and is able to plan the use of these interventions in patient care using evidence-based information.
