Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing Competence in Specialized Services (4 cr)

Objectives (course unit)

The student
-is able to recognize the symptoms of mental health or substance abuse problems and can assess the caring needs based on these symptoms
-manages the principles of therapeutic nurse-patient relationship as well as relationship with the patient’s significant others in adult and old people specialized mental health services
-manages the nursing interventions of community care, group therapy and motivational care
-recognizes the challenging behavior of the patient and knows how to act in these situations.
-is familiar with the psychopharmacology and pharmacotherapy of the severe mental health disorders and can give patient education in these issues.
-acknowledges sustainability issues in mental health care as well as in his or hers own actions.

Content (course unit)

-mental health and substance abuse problems treated in specialized care services
-professional assessment and decision-making in mental health and substance abuse nursing
-psychopharmacology and pharmacological care of the substance abuse problems
-pharmacotherapy, patient education and motivational approach
-therapeutic interaction with patients in different age groups (adults and old people) and with their significant others
-mental health nursing interventions: community care, group therapy and motivational approach
-challenging behavior

Prerequisites (course unit)

At the beginning of alternative vocational studies, the student must have completed 135 credits of studies. These should include theoretical studies and orientation to practical training of the area which the student has chosen for alternative vocational studies, as well as studies in anatomy and physiology. The required area is mental health and substance abuse care.It is recommended that the student has completed the supervised practical in the area of mental health and substance abuse care.

The student
- Is able to assess the patient’s caring needs in specialized services, both individually and as a part of the interdisciplinary team
-recognizes the needs of support of the patient’s significant others
-knows and recognizes different aspects of the therapeutic nurse-patient interaction with patients (adults and old people) and their significant others.
-knows and recognizes different situations of the challenging behavior and knows professionals ways to act in these situations.
-knows the group and community care as well as the motivational approach and is able to plan the use of these interventions in patient care using evidence-based information.
Psychiatry:
The student
-recognizes the main symptoms of the mental health and substance abuse problems
-as a member of a interdisciplinary team is able to plan the caring needs of the patient according to the severity of the patient’s symptoms and their impact on patient’s ability to function
-knows the main medications and pharmacotherapy of the mental health and substance abuse problems and

Nursing
The student
-is able to assess widely patients caring needs as a member of the interdisciplinary team, but also independently, in specialized services.
-is able to assess the needs of support of the patient’s significant others and knows ways to support them.
-knows and recognizes different aspects of the therapeutic nurse-patient interaction with patients (adults and old people) and their significant others, and is able to assess his/hers
own development needs in therapeutic interaction.
-knows and recognizes different situations of the challenging behavior and manages professionals ways to act in these situations.
-knows and can assess mental health nursing interventions and is able to plan evidence –based practice in patient care.
-is able to critically assess his/hers own attitudes in mental health and substance abuse care.
-recognizes his/her own professional development needs and is actively using this information to develop his/hers own professional performance.
-is able to use motivational and educational methods in pharmacotherapy according the individual needs of the patient.
Psychiatry:
The student
-recognizes the main symptoms of the mental health and substance abuse problems and knows their explanation models.
-is able to individually as well as a member of a interdisciplinary team to plan the caring needs of the patient according to the severity of the patient’s symptoms and their impact on patient’s ability to function
-knows the main medications for the mental health and substance abuse problems and manages the pharmacotherapy.

The student
-is able to assess widely and critically patients caring needs as a member of the interdisciplinary team, but also independently, in specialized services.
-is able to assess the needs of support of the patient’s significant others and manages different ways to support them.
- recognizes different aspects of the therapeutic nurse-patient interaction with patients (adults and old people) and their significant others, and is able to critically assess and develop his/hers own therapeutic skills.
-knows and recognizes different situations of the challenging behavior, manages professionals ways to act in these situations and is able to critically assess them afterwards.
-is able to debrief the challenging situation with professionals, patients and others in the situation.
-knows and can assess mental health nursing interventions and is able to widely plan evidence –based practice in patient care.
-is able to critically assess his/hers own, communities’ and society’s attitudes towards mental health and substance abuse problems.
-recognizes and reflects his/her own professional development needs and is actively using this information to develop his/hers own professional performance.
-manages motivational and educational methods in pharmacotherapy.
