Objectives

The student is able to
- perform laboratory diagnostics of acid-base balance tests, fluid and electrolyte balance tests, waste product tests and key protein tests and understand their analytical methods, test indications and clinical relevance
- explain the preanalytical requirements and interference factors of the tests
- evaluate the reliability of laboratory results and analysis processes, and apply quality control in his/her work
- explain the principles of the different analytical methods
- change and record the parameters needed for a laboratory information system
- apply the learned theoretical knowledge to the assessment of the validity of the sample and the interpretation of the results
- perform analyses under supervision and pay attention to occupational safety and ergonomics in his/her work
- work in a small group and take responsibility for his/her own work and that of the group

Content

Analyses of arterial and capillary blood gas samples, preanalytical problems and quality assurance, interpretation of results and clinical significance.
The test indications, preanalytical factors, analytical methods and clinical significance of the most important fluid and electrolyte balance tests, waste product tests and protein tests.
Operating principles and use and maintenance of a blood gas analyser.
Quality management.
Handling of reagents, calibration and control of test methods and acceptance criteria.
Taking a blood gas sample as a skin puncture and performing an analysis with a blood gas analyser.
Evaluating the quality of the samples and the reliability of the results and decision making.
Working in a clinical laboratory and teamwork skills

Prerequisites

Examining Enzymes, Lipids and Carbohydrate Metabolism 7B00EG22 must be completed before participation in the course.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student knows the key issues and recognizes the most common pre-analytical and analytical error factors. The student needs significant guidance and support at different stages of the analysis process. The student performs the supervised work, needs support to evaluate and interpret the results. The student works in the teaching laboratory, taking into account occupational safety issues and follows the given work instructions. Students look at things from their own perspective but work with the group.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student knows the key issues and can analyse things in relation to each other. The student is able to explain the pre-analytical and analytical error factors and apply the knowledge to practice.
The student performs the steps of the analysis process with instructions, relying on other students and on the teacher, if necessary. The student is able to interpret the results and evaluate the reliability of the results. The student works in the teaching laboratory, taking into account occupational safety issues and follows the given work instructions. Students examine and evaluate their work from their own and the group's point of view.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student understands the contexts, can apply the theory to practice and justify his/her decisions. The student is able to explain the pre-analytical and analytical error factors of different studies. The student performs mostly in a self-directed way at different stages of the analysis process. The student works in the teaching laboratory, taking into account safety issues, following the given work instructions and is able to justify his / her own activities. Students examine and evaluate their work analytically from their own and the group's point of view.
