Objectives
The course provides the skills and knowledge to be able to work in advanced clinical nursing environments.
After completing the course, the student
• knows the essential content of an advanced medical-surgical patient assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing in diverse environments of nursing work.
• utilizes evidence-based information at different stages of the care path.
• can act in medical-surgical nursing environment safely and in accordance with ethical principles.
• can support the patient and his/her family.
• can evaluate and develop his own activities in a multi-professional environment.
Content
Supervised clinical training in medical-surgical clinical nursing environments.
Prerequisites
The student must have completed 135 credits. These should include medical-surgical nursing courses, anatomy and physiology course, and minimum of 6 supervised clinical trainings.
Participation in the course Medical-Surgical Nursing. The student has participated in the Finnish language integration part of the nursing course required and related to the clinical training field.
Assessment criteria, pass/fail
Pass:
The student
• knows the basics of medical-surgical nursing assessment, implementation, and evaluation.
• utilizes evidence-based information at different stages of the care path.
• can act under supervision in nursing environment safely and in accordance with ethical principles.
• can support the patient and his family under guidance.
• can evaluate and develop his own activities under supervision in a multi-professional. environment as a member of a team.
• takes responsibility for his/her own learning.
Fail:
The student
• is not able to perform under supervision in medical-surgical nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• does not perform nursing under guidance, and does not know how to justify his/her actions.
• does not utilize evidence-based information at different stages of the care path.
• does not know how to work under supervision in nursing environment safely and in accordance with ethical principles.
• does not know how to support the patient and his/her family under guidance.
• does not know how to evaluate and develop his/her own activities under guidance in a multi-professional environment as a member of a team.
• does not take responsibility for his/her own learning.
• is unrealistic in the assessment of their own performance and is unable to receive feedback
• fails to comply with agreed guidelines for supervised clinical practice (e.g. does not take responsibility for his/her own learning or work; misses deadlines, does not respect working hours, does not report absences, does not complete the total number of hours in the placement)
• demonstrates any form of dishonesty
