Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the communication and interaction skills needed in working life, especially in projects. The course is integrated in the Catalyst learning environment.
On completion of the course, students will
• Understand the objectives, tasks, and tools of organizational communication.
• Be familiar with common text genres used in professional contexts, including language usage recommendations.
• Consider the target audience when planning and executing communication related to projects.
• Communicate effectively as experts, with a focus on interaction, purpose, and responsibility

Content

• Internal and external organizational communication.
• Participation in meetings, negotiations, and conferences.
• Project communication documents (communication plans, meeting invitations, memos, announcements).
• Expert-level communication skills.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student will be able to identify different communication situations related to a project. He/she writes texts related to project management, following templates and guidelines. Written and oral communication is understandable but unclear or fumbling. The ability to substantiate claims is modest.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student understands the importance of communication as part of a productive project. The student is familiar with project meeting practices and writes project management texts taking into account the text type, the situation and the recipients. Written and oral communication is coherent, persuasive and interactive. The student justifies his/her views.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows the objectives and tasks of communication and understands the importance of project documents, including a detailed communication plan, as part of effective communication. The student is able to work purposefully and appropriately in meetings using his/her understanding of group dynamics and group roles. The student will present an expert presentation in a convincing, enthusiastic and interactive manner. The essential information is excellently structured and summarised, and the language and style are controlled.
