Strength of MaterialsLaajuus (4 cr)
Code: 5R00GQ46
Credits
4 op
Objectives
After the course, the student can calculate the normal stress, shear stress and bending stress distributions for regularly shaped cross-sections caused by external loads. In addition, the student knows how to calculate the deformations caused by normal force and bending moment for regularly shaped cross-sections.
He/she understands the dependencies between stress, tension and deformation. The student knows the effects of the shape, size and material of the cross-section of the structure on stresses and deformations, as well as being able to calculate the strength theoretical quantities of the reduced cross-section. The student knows how to calculate the stresses and deformations of a straight rod for bending and shear, and to dimension a buckling rod.
Content
Basic concepts of strength theory, basics of material theory. Hooke's law, theory of elasticity and plasticity and permissible stresses. Quantities of cross-sectional geometry. Stresses and deformations of stress forms.
Designing for normal force, bending, shear.
General stability management, buckling design, principles of buckling and overturning.
Practice work.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student can calculate the stresses caused by tension, compression, bending and shear for rectangular cross-sections. He understands the effect of buckling length on buckling capacity. He can calculate the cross-sectional dimensions of a rectangular cross-section.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student knows how to calculate the stresses caused by tension, compression, bending and shear for conventional symmetrical cross-sections. He can calculate the buckling capacity of the rod. He can calculate the cross-sectional dimensions of symmetrical cross-sections. The student can calculate deformations caused by normal force and bending.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student knows how to calculate the stresses caused by tension, compression, bending and shear also for asymmetric cross-sections. He can calculate the buckling capacity of the rod. He can calculate the cross-sectional dimensions of asymmetrical cross-sections. The student can calculate deformations caused by normal force and bending.
