Objectives
After the course, the student is able to:
- analyse and evaluate all major waste fractions and their treatment methods
- apply and critically evaluate waste management decisions based on the 3R principle
- identify and discuss the links between circular economy, sustainability and recycling
- conduct, interpret and report laboratory experiments in waste treatment
- develop and articulate new, sustainable waste management approaches to address modern environmental challenges
Content
Composition, collection, transportation and treatment of waste material; Waste legislation, policies and regulations; Waste treatment technologies (landfills and their operation, waste incineration, biowaste treatment, hazardours waste treatment); Laboratory exercises: composting, leachate tests.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Demonstrates basic understanding of major waste fractions and their treatment methods. Can apply the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in simple waste management scenarios. Recognizes the connections between circular economy, sustainability, and recycling at a fundamental level. Capable of conducting basic laboratory experiments in waste treatment and reporting results. Shows initial ideas in developing sustainable waste management approaches.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
Analyzes and evaluates major waste fractions and their treatment methods effectively. Applies and critically evaluates waste management decisions based on the 3R principle. Understands and discusses the links between circular economy, sustainability, and recycling in depth. Successfully conducts, interprets, and reports on more complex laboratory experiments in waste treatment. Proposes viable and sustainable waste management approaches to address environmental challenges.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Exhibits comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of all major waste fractions and advanced treatment methods. Expertly applies and critically evaluates waste management decisions, innovatively using the 3R principle. Demonstrates a deep understanding of the interplay between circular economy, sustainability, and recycling. Skilfully conducts, interprets, and reports sophisticated laboratory experiments in waste treatment. Develops and articulates innovative, sustainable waste management strategies, showing a high level of creativity and understanding of modern environmental challenges.
