Objectives
The course consists of layouting and typography for digital and printed media, as well as branding, design management, infographics and sustainable design methods.
Get to know the principles and systems of layout and typography for designing various digital and printed publications, as well as UI layouts and infographics. Understand the history of layouting, typography, logos and symbols. Use generative AI and other digital tools for making layouting and typography faster and more professionally.
Familiarise with the principles of design management, create brand elements and get to know sustainable methods for productions.
Content
The course contains:
• Grid-based layouting and typography for digital and printed media, as well as UI design
• Branding and design management
• Creating logos and graphic icons, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of typefaces
• Infographics and sustainable design methods
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student:
• Is able to identify and define phenomena and basic concepts related to graphic design.
• Performs the assigned tasks under supervision/assistance. Knows different procedures but cannot justify their choices. Performs routine, pre-learned tasks.
• Has some knowledge of how to give and receive feedback. Examines and evaluates things from a personal point of view. Works adequately in a group. Identifies practices important in the field of graphic design. Takes responsibility for their own performance.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student:
• Outlines the relationships between phenomena and concepts related to the field. Is able to understand how the principles of graphic design and typography can be applied to various platforms and publications.
• Is able to choose the most suitable procedure from different options and justify their choice. Shows a good visual eye and is able to express information visually. Strong visual ideas and an understanding of composition, form and colour principles.
• Is able to give and receive feedback actively and constructively. Examines and evaluates issues from both their own perspective and that of their community. Is able to cooperate responsibly and is ready to develop their interaction skills further.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student:
• Shows a high visual quality and visual thinking.
• Understands large-scale entities in graphic design and the relationships between them. Is able to generalise, analyse and connect within a professional context.
• Is able to look for different operating methods and solution options, justify choices and try out new methods. Evaluate solutions creatively and create new ones. Finds new and insightful solutions to express their message visually.
• Uses feedback systematically as a tool for professional growth and that of their community. Examine and evaluate themselves and the community or work entity in which they work in their own professional field. Is able to cooperate and act responsibly, flexibly and constructively.
