Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the fundamentals of understanding colour theory, dimensions of
colour and the basics of composition in visual art.

The course prepares students to understand and use the basics of colour theory and principles of
composition in visual art. After completing the course, the student knows the basic categories of colour theory that are logical and useful: The colour wheel, colour harmony, and the context of how colours are used. The student also knows the principles of compositions in visual art and can analyze the visual image.

Content

Colour theory and dimensions of colour.
Practical guidance for colour mixing and the visual effects of a specific colour combination.
Introduction to basic painting techniques.
Principles of composition in visual art.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student understands the basics of colour theory and composition in visual art. The student
participates in the working with course tasks and feedback.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student outlines the dimensions of colour, colour theory and principles of visual composition and applies these well in their own exercises. The student recognizes the basic painting techniques. The student works actively as a member of a group and is able to receive and give feedback.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to analyze different colour theories and principles of composition in visual art and
apply these very well in their own exercises. The student recognizes the basic painting techniques
and uses solutions creatively. The student works highly motivated as a member of a group and is
able to receive and give feedback.
