Objectives

The course prepares the student to develop concepts for user-centered interactive applications and test them. The student applies design thinking and turns user needs into user interface functionalities and visual look and feel.

After completing the course, the student
• Knows the user-centered design principles and design processes
• Understands the role of user-centric design in business success
• Makes design decisions based on user needs and sustainability requirements
• Applies different UX methods, such as research, ideation, modelling, low-fidelity prototyping and testing
• Works fluently in a designer group and uses collaborative design tools

Content

User-centered design process, mindset, and context. Sustainable design principles in concepts
Applying design thinking and producing UX deliverables, for example, personas, scenarios, use cases, requirements, mood boards, storyboards, and low-fidelity prototype
Planning the basic usability test and testing prototypes
Pitching the concept

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student understands the basics of the concepting in user experience design. The student produces some UX deliverables and participates in the conception work and reporting.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student outlines the main principles of concepting in user experience design. They can produce models and prototypes according to user-centered design principles. The student selects the necessary method for the problem. The student works actively as a member of a group and can report their work well.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student can look for different user experience design methods and try out new user-centered solutions. The student is highly motivated and takes committed responsibility for their own and the group's performance and reporting.

Location and time

Course days are mostly organised as contact teaching in Mediapolis. Distance learning days are organised on Zoom.

Teaching methods

During the course students design a user-centric concept for mobile application. This course consists lectures, and a lot of Learning by doing. Lessons, team work, presentations, assignments.

Learning materials

The teacher will instruct about learning materials during the course.

Student workload

In addition to lessons and team work, the students work with the UX handbook and other assignments individually.

Content scheduling

Target group understanding and modeling.
Empathy map, scenario and requirements.
Moodboarding. Ideation. Storyboarding.
Sustainable design basics.
Prototyping, sitemaps and usability testing.

Practical training and working life cooperation

The students will connect to the working life through assignments.
