Objectives (course unit)
The student is able - to use basic grammar - have daily conversations
Prerequisites (course unit)
Chinese 1 is a prerequisite if the student has no knowledge of Chinese pronunciation. If the student knows Chinese pinyin system they can attend Chinese 2 course.
Location and time
Period 4 (Spring 2025) Regular attendance expected. Tuesdays 8:30-10:00 and Wednesdays 8:30-9:15
Assessment methods and criteria
Continuous assessment of pronunciation and speaking skills, plus class quizzes and tests that test reading, writing and listening comprehension ability.

Teaching methods
This course is taught online. The focus is on the skills of reading, speaking and understanding spoken Chinese, and also writing the characters discussed in the course. The teaching uses the communicative approach. New vocabulary and grammar are introduced through discussion. Assessment of areas needing clarification and practice is done every lesson; feedback is given regularly, and exercises created to clarify and to further practise.
Student workload
3 credits, equivalent to 75-90 hours of work, divided as follows: • Zoom lessons: 28 hours • Homework and study of material taught: 47+ hours
Content scheduling
Pronunciation ability developed in Chinese 1 will be further strengthened. Students will be introduced gradually to Chinese characters and basic Chinese grammar so as to be able to greet, ask about others' wellbeing, know how to produce simple sentences in Chinese, and also know basic structures of Chinese questions.
