Objectives (course unit)

After the course students are familiar with the specific features of urban Southeast Asia in a global context. In particular, the course provides insights into different trajectories and strategies for transition towards urban sustainability in the region. As to transferrable skills, the course improves students' skills in locating and analyzing new information.

Content (course unit)

Urbanization is one of the main global trends in the current world but it shows divergent trajectories in different regions. This course deals with the particular features of cities and urbanization in Southeast Asia and how countries cities face and address various urban sustainability challenges. The key themes are the impact of colonialism on the historical and current developments of Southeast Asian cities, urban governance and politics, urban planning and issues related to inequality and poverty. Most of the lecturers are from the region and hence can provide local views and approaches to these issues. The course consists of four modules: 1) Introduction: urban Asia (1 ECTS) 2) Introduction to Urban Southeast Asia 3) Urban and Regional Planning 4) Urban Inequality

Prerequisites (course unit)

Basic knowledge about Southeast Asia or urban studies. For example the Asia Network course “Johdatus Kaakkois-Aasiaan”

The course materials include recorded online lectures, Canva-slides, obligatory and elective reading materials, and Internet materials.

Further information

REGISTRATION Students from the University of Turku, and the other member universities of the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies can register for this course through the Peppi or Sisu systems. This course has a maximum intake of 40 students. Students are selected in the order of application. The places are divided evenly between the member universities of the Network. STARTING THE COURSE On the first day of the course, you will receive a welcome message from the teacher, including a link to the course webpage. The course is offered through the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies https://www.asianet.fi/.
