Objectives (course unit)

This course aims to introduce User Interface Design in the context of XR design. While discussing the fundamentals in designing user interfaces for XR applications, this course will also touch upon related topics such as usability, design ethics and accessibility. This course discusses practical steps from concept design to medium fidelity prototype.

In Moodle, self-paced, non-stop delivery. The course will be completed between September 15 and December 5, 2025.

The course does not have examinations.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course is a PASS/FAIL course; and every design exercise will be given a short feedback after the students complete the course. To pass the course,the students need to complete their assignments and demonstrate: understanding on how to implement usability through analysis and concept design; and ability to visualise a UI concept.

Teaching methods

Independent study and assignments on Moodle-platform. The course consists of different core components such as: - Three pre-recorded lectures - Curated material archive of theoretical explanations and short tutorials for Figma - Two design exercises by using the recommended software/applications

Learning materials

All materials (pre-recorded lectures, literatures, and other pointers) are available in Moodle.

Student workload

54 hours of students' work, including materials and assignments.

Further information

This course is a beginner lever course that serves a purpose to provide a general discussion on user interface in the context of XR (Extended Reality). A prior understanding of XR, AR, VR, MR, and WebXR as well as design will be helpful for the students to navigate the literature. However, the course does not require any prior technical knowledge in XR.
