Objectives (course unit)
In this course, the aim is to familiarize oneself with the profession of a nurse paramedic, their work, work environment, and methods of work. The course provides the necessary competence and knowledge base for various sudden illness and injury situations encountered in paramedic work.
Upon completing the course, the student will:
• Understand the tasks of the paramedic service as part of the patient care chain
• Be able to systematically examine a patient and perform an assessment of the patient's care needs and a work diagnosis
• Know the key methods of treating patients
• Be proficient in the safe use of examination, treatment, and transportation equipment for patients
• Be familiar with the key communication, messaging, and reporting methods used in nurse paramedic work
• Understand the fundamentals of safe emergency vehicle driving
Content (course unit)
• Emergency service, ethical principles in paramedicine, and legislation guiding nurse paramedic work
• Examination of patients, constructing a work diagnosis, and assessing care needs
• Basics of emergency medical care and medication for suddenly ill, injured, or socially distressed patients
• Documentation and communication in paramedicine
• Safe operation of emergency vehicles
Prerequisites (course unit)
Completion of first-year studies, Medical and Surgical Nursing, Anatomy and Physiology, Medication and Medication calculation.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
Student
• Understands the tasks of the emergency service, stakeholders, and the fundamentals of legislation governing paramedic service.
• Can assess the need for patient care and initiate key treatment measures under supervision
• Recognizes the urgent need for patient care and can initiate essential paramedic procedures as required
• Understands the basics of communication, messaging, and reporting in paramedicine
• Knows the basics of responsibilities and duties related to the safe operation of emergency vehicles
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
Student
• Knows the tasks of the emergency service, stakeholders, and their roles within the patient care chain, as well as the key aspects of legislation governing paramedic service.
• Can assess the need for paramedic patient care and direct the client to appropriate follow-up care.
• Recognizes the urgent need for patient care and can initiate essential paramedic procedures as required.
• Can extensively use communication, messaging, and reporting methods in paramedicine.
• Masters the responsibilities and duties related to the safe operation of emergency vehicles.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
Student
• Knows the tasks of the emergency service, stakeholders, their responsibilities, and duties within the patient care chain and can apply legislation governing paramedic service.
• Can assess the need for paramedic patient care, direct the client to appropriate follow-up care, and make the decision to transport or not in collaboration with a physician.
• Identifies disruptions in a patient's basic vital functions, recognizes the urgent need for patient care, and independently initiates the necessary paramedic procedures.
• Independently uses communication, messaging, and reporting methods in paramedicine between different stakeholders.
• Fully masters the responsibilities and duties related to the safe operation of emergency vehicles.
Exam schedules
At the end of the course, the exam is taken in Exam during a separately announced period. Retakes are arranged with the course's responsible teacher
Assessment methods and criteria
Orientaatiotunnilla ja Taitokeskuksella suoritettavissa taitopajoissa ja simulaatioissa pakollinen läsnäolovelvollisuus. Ajokoulutuksessa pakollinen läsnäolovelvollisuus. Poissaolot näistä korvataan seuraavan vuoden toteutuksella.

Teaching methods
Theoretical instruction: lectures and assignments, skills workshops and simulations at the Skills Center (=Taitokeskus). Emergency driving training, including theoretical instruction and driving practice on a track
Learning materials
Kuisma et al. Ensihoito – specific parts as agreed, & Telkki Perutason ensihoito. From the Current Care Guidelines, especially the Resuscitation guideline, and materials available on the learning platform.
Student workload

Practical training and working life cooperation
Driving practice is provided in collaboration with working life. A lecture by a paramedic working in the field at the beginning of the course
Further information
The instruction carried out at the Skills Center (Taitokeskus) is mandatory, and protective clothing must be worn. After the sessions, students are responsible for returning equipment to its proper place, restocking supplies if needed, and performing necessary maintenance procedures. Neglecting these duties will affect the overall course grade.
