Mammography (5 cr)

Objectives (course unit)

The course provides you with essential information on breast imaging and ultrasound examinations, as well as the procedures involved in them. In clinical training, you will learn to position the most common mammography imaging projections and act aseptically during procedures. You will gain knowledge in quality control and work on radiation safety practices.

After completing the course, the student:
• knows the principles of mammography examinations and procedures
• knows the structure and function of mammography equipment and auxiliary equipment and quality assurance
• can assess mammographic image quality
• discerns normal and pathological conditions of breasts
• knows the legislation concerning safe medical use of ionizing radiation in mammography and procedures
• knows the principles of self-examination and palpation of breasts
• can position the most common mammography projections with a training patient in learning situations
• knows the most common ultrasound examinations and procedures
• can act aseptically, ergonomically and ethically

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

• can name differences, advantages and challenges between different imaging techniques of the breasts
• can describe the structure and function of mammography equipment and quality assurance
• can name the most common mammography projections and criteria of good radiographic images according
• can discern normal and pathological conditions of breasts from x-ray pictures
• can describe the legislation concerning safe medical use of ionizing radiation
• can position the most common mammography projections in learning situations mainly independently
• can work in learning situations of ultrasound examinations as part of a work group
• can act aseptically and ergonomically in learning situations

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

• can explain differences, advantages and challenges between different imaging techniques of the breasts from the point of view of different-aged patients
• can explain the structure and function of mammography equipment and quality assurance
• can explain the most common mammography projections and criteria of good radiographic images
• can discern normal and pathological conditions of breasts from x-ray images
• can explain the legislation concerning safe medical use of ionizing radiation
• can position the most common mammography projections in learning situations mainly independently
• can work in learning situations of ultrasound examinations as part of a work group
• can act aseptically and ergonomically in learning situations

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

• can versatilely explain differences, advantages and challenges between different imaging techniques of the breasts from the point of view of different-aged patients
• can reasonably explain the structure and function of mammography equipment and quality assurance
• know versatilely the most common mammography projections and criteria of good radiographic images
• can discern normal and pathological conditions of breasts from x-ray images
• know the legislation concerning safe medical use of ionizing radiation so that he/she can reasonably explain their contents to patients, their family members and other staff if necessary
• can position the most common mammography projections in learning situations mainly independently
• can work in learning situations of ultrasound examinations as part of a work group
• can act aseptically and ergonomically in learning situations

Teaching methods

Opintojakso koostuu seuraavista osioista:
1) mammografian laitetekniikka, luento
2) rintojen kuvantamistutkimukset, opetus, tehtävät , laboraatiot ja Exam-tentti
3) rintaradiologia, luento
4. rintojen omatarkkailu ja palpaatiolaboraatiot
5. mammo uä+toimenpiteet Seinäjoen kuvantamisyksikössä
6. uä-tutkimukset+laboraatiot

Lähiopetuksena järjestetään luento-opetusta, ryhmätyötunteja sekä laboraatiot. Laboraatioihin ja ryhmätyötunneille osallistuminen edellyttää ennakkotehtävien/-valmisteluiden tekemistä.

Oppimisalusta Moodlessa suoritetaan itsenäistä ja ryhmätyöskentelyä erillisten ohjeiden mukaisesti. Moodle löytyy opintojakson koodilla.

Laboraatioissa, mammo uä+toimenpiteissä sekä fyysikon ja radiologin tunneilla 100 % läsnäolovelvoite. Mikäli opiskelija on poissa oppitunnilta, jossa tehdään ryhmätehtävä, tulee hänen suorittaa ko. tehtävä itsenäisesti opettajan ohjeen mukaisesti. Kaikki annetut tehtävät tulee suorittaa hyväksytysti.
