Objectives (course unit)
After completing the course, the student will be able to name and locate in Finnish and Latin the following human ligaments and define their functions (the course focuses on the most important structures):
• Ligaments of the upper and lower cervical spine
• Ligaments of the spine and thorax, including intervertebral discs
• Ligaments of the pelvic girdle
• Ligaments of the upper limb
• Ligaments of the lower limb
Prerequisites (course unit)
Course: Human musculoskeletal anatomy 1: Basic terms and structures 1 - 1 ECTS or equivalent knowledge.
Further information (course unit)
This course is part of the 7-credit Human Anatomy course in the Physiotherapy Degree Programme.
Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)
Passed: The student demonstrates proficiency in the essential knowledge of the musculoskeletal system anatomy and achieves at least 70% correct answers in the exam.
Failed: The student's understanding of the anatomy of the musculoskeletal system is inadequate, and they scored less than 70% on the exam.
Location and time
The course is implemented 100% as an online course on Moodle during the implementation period.
Competence is demonstrated through an Exam test.
Exam schedules
You can register for the Exam test after you have received the right to study. Exam tests are taken in designated Exam rooms, which are available in multiple higher education institutions.
Each student has three attempts to pass the test during their study entitlement period. The passing threshold is 70%. If the test is not passed within three attempts, the student may re-enroll in the course.
Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment of the course is based on the Exam test and is graded on a pass/fail basis as follows:
Pass: The student demonstrates mastery of the essential knowledge of the musculoskeletal system's anatomy and scores at least 70% correct in the Exam test.
Fail: The student's knowledge of the musculoskeletal system's anatomy is insufficient, and they score less than 70% correct in the Exam test.
A failed Exam test can be retaken a maximum of two times.

Pass/Fail
Teaching methods
The course is conducted entirely as a self-paced online course.
On the Moodle learning platform: Written study materials, short video lectures, independent self-assessment, and the opportunity for peer discussions.
In Exam test facilities: Course examination.
Learning materials
All Exam materials are available on the Moodle platform.
The exam materials are primarily based on two sources:
1. Hokkanen, M. & Vierimaa, H. 2019. Tuki- ja liikuntaelimistön anatomia. Opiskelukirja. Sanoma Pro Oy.
(This book is primarily used as a textual source.)
2. Platzer, W. 2014. Color Atlas of Human Anatomy, Vol 1: Locomotor System. Thieme Medical Publishers, Inc.
(This book is primarily used as an image source.)
Additionally, anatomical images can be searched using Google Images. It is also recommended to explore three-dimensional models or videos on platforms such as YouTube, as understanding two-dimensional images can otherwise be challenging.
Student workload
The course scope is 1 ECTS credit (1 ECTS), which corresponds to 27 hours of study.
Content scheduling
The entire content of the course is available for the entire duration of the study right.
