Objectives (course unit)

The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the basics of renovation, key operating methods, common damage phenomena and repair solutions, and the ability to incorporate the circular economy of construction into the renovation process. The aim is to learn about and utilise circular economy services in such a way that they can manage recycling activities in a renovation project. The aim of the course is to provide participants with a common starting point for the concepts of renovation and the circular economy.

Content (course unit)

The course consists of five themes, three of which focus on the key concepts of renovation and two on the circular economy.
The themes of renovation are:
1) Structural stress factors, damage phenomena and mechanisms, and building physics related to damage
2) History of the building stock to be renovated, typical structural types in different periods, old building components, and technical obsolescence. The main focus of the course is on the building stock of the 20th century.
3) Condition surveys and measurements, indoor air surveys, and repair plans based on them, especially concrete repairs. The effects of uncertainty in initial data, such as measurement errors, on plans.
The themes of circular economy are:
4) Circular economy services in the construction industry and their functionality and utilization. Services that are available or should be developed in the course include: circular economy consulting, demolition mapping and its content, data management, marketplaces for building components and soil materials, demolition of buildings, and sorting and industrial processing of materials. In particular, building components that can be dismantled as a whole and are recyclable are discussed.
5) Changes caused by the circular economy to construction processes. The effects of the circular economy on the choice of implementation method, contracts and schedule. Circular economy goals set by the client for the project and their economic effects. Determination of the emission and cost factors of recycling and their interdependencies. In particular, the effects of dismantling parts intact are examined.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student has basic knowledge related to renovation construction. There may be minor shortcomings in the knowledge of basic knowledge. In this case, the student knows the basics and the most important operating methods of renovation construction, as well as the most common stress factors, damage phenomena and repair solutions. The student is able to name the most important circular economy services and plan the implementation of recycling in a renovation project. He is able to bring the most important elements of the circular economy into the construction process.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student has basic knowledge of renovation construction. The student is able to make standard analyses and conclusions based on basic information. In this case, the student is familiar with renovation construction activities and operating methods, as well as standard stress factors, damage phenomena and repair solutions. The student is familiar with the contents and implementation options of circular economy services. He is able to assess the costs of different options and their impact on the schedule. He is able to adapt the circular economy as part of various renovation construction projects.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student has a wide range of knowledge and concepts related to renovation construction. The student can make diverse analyses and conclusions based on the things he has learned. In this case, the student has a wide range of knowledge of renovation construction activities and operating methods, as well as a wide range of stress factors, damage phenomena and repair solutions. The student has a comprehensive understanding of the implementation of the circular economy and is able to take responsibility for the planning and implementation of recycling in all stages of the construction process. He is able to analyze different implementation options for different customer needs from several different perspectives.

Kurssi on jaksotettu korjausrakentamisen ja kiertotalouden osiin. Korjausrakentamisen koostuu kahdesta teemasta ja kiertotalous kolmesta.

Opintojaksolla käsitellään käytännön työelämän esimerkkitapauksia ja opiskellaan olennaisimpia asioita rakennushankkeessa esiintyvien ongelmien ratkaisuista.
