Objectives (course unit)
Oral skills in Swedish are at the heart of the course.
After completing the course
-The student can tell about their education, their own expertise in the professional field and their goals in Swedish.
-The student knows the most central terminology in their field of study and is able to communicate appropriately in communication situations related to working life.
-Students understand the importance of oral communication when networking in the Nordic cultural environment.

Professional terminology in Swedish.
Job tasks in the field.
Oral communication situations related to job search and other aspects of working life.
Prerequisites (course unit)
Starting level: High school Swedish syllabus or equivalent level European Framework of Reference skill level.
Take the Swedish entry level test and, if necessary, complete the preparatory studies before the course begins.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
(Level B1.1) Student
- is able to communicate simply about his/her own professional skills (e.g. job application)
- is able to tell about his own professional field in a concise manner
- handles mainly the most important predictable interaction situations and customer contacts in their own field in a comprehensible manner
- uses the basic vocabulary of the field in such a way that the essential message is conveyed
- uses simple grammatical basic structures
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
Level B1.2) Student
- is able to communicate clearly in a way appropriate to the situation from his/her own professional expertise (e.g. job application)
- can tell about his own professional field quite well
- handles everyday interaction situations and customer contacts in their own field fairly well
- uses the basic vocabulary of the field in such a way that the key message is conveyed
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
(Skill level B2.2-C1) Student
- is able to communicate fluently in a way appropriate to the situation from his/her own professional expertise (e.g. job application)
- can tell about their own professional field in a versatile and fluent manner
- handles diverse interaction situations and customer contacts in their own field in a natural way
- uses the basic vocabulary of their field so that the message is clearly conveyed
Location and time
Contact teaching according to the timetable on Monday mornings at Kuntokatu. If needed, a remote lesson on Teams or independent work.
Exam schedules
Written exam on campus in a classroom on 30 March 2026.
Oral exam on campus on 13 April or 20 April according to a separate schedule.

Teaching methods
Written and oral exercises that are important for workplace communication, including in the media field. Vocabulary practice related to the themes of the course.
The aim of the exercises is to practice communication for working life.

Participation in teaching, completing homework assignments, preparing for the written and oral exams, and independently reviewing the basics of Swedish if needed.
Content scheduling
1st period: studying, studying in the media field, job searching, talking about one’s background, operating in working life
2nd period: different work tasks and situations in the media field, e.g. customer communication, emails, and phone calls

Further information
Attendance requirement is 80%, meaning one absence is allowed.
Absences cannot be compensated with extra assignments.
The official national objectives included in degrees must be met. In the studies included in your university of applied sciences degree, or in another way, you must demonstrate that you have achieved:
1) Such proficiency in Finnish and Swedish as required by the Act (6.6.2003/424) and Decree (481/03) on the language proficiency of government officials for positions requiring a higher education degree in a bilingual administrative area, and which is necessary for professional practice and professional development, AND
2) such written and oral proficiency in one or two foreign languages, in accordance with the degree programme, as is necessary for professional practice and professional development.
Point 1 means that in a position requiring a higher education degree, a person must have excellent command of the majority language of the administrative area and at least satisfactory command of the other official language (usually Finnish and Swedish). Excellent language proficiency is demonstrated during the studies through the maturity test.
The degree certificate includes a separate entry on oral and written proficiency in the second national language.
