Objectives (course unit)
The student
- meets the patient, family and colleagues appropriately and respectfully, is capable of creating and maintaining professional interaction with the patient, and uses good work community skills
- respects clients/patients and meets them as experts in their lives
- applies the essential nursing knowledge and skills required in the specified care environment and is able to carry out evidence based, ethical and high-quality nursing care
- is able, under supervision, to define patient's nursing needs; to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in a client-oriented and health-promoting manner, in co-operation with the patient, family and other health care and social services professionals, and is able to use structured documentation system
- knows patient's holistic care path, including discharge and planning for continuing care, and the basics of service management

Fail:
The student
- lacks understanding of professional encounter: treats patients, family, or members of the work community inappropriately or disrespectfully and professional interaction and working life skills are insufficient
- has obvious gaps in nursing knowledge and skills required in the specified care environment; searching for and utilising knowledge is incomplete, and even after a tutorial discussions there are misunderstandings in the theoretical knowledge
- is not able to perform main clinical skills under supervision
- is not able to observe patient's basic vital functions and general condition and decision-making skills are inadequate
- is not able to recognise patient’s needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of care is inadequate and patient’s care path is unclear
- does not recognize the boundaries of own competence, resulting in endangering patient safety
- is not able to assess nursing quality in order to develop patient’s care
- is not able to promote patient safety and prevent incidents at all stages of the nursing care process
- does not master the principles of infection control and aseptic practice
- makes mistakes in the patient's medication and fluid therapy despite guidance; has not updated medication passport
- does not show interest in patient and family guidance and withdraws from it
- violates confidentiality or patient data privacy
- fails to follow the agreed rules for supervised clinical training (e.g. takes no responsibility for his/her own learning; the goals are missing; does not
follow the working hours, does not report his/ her absences, and/or the total amount of required hours is not fulfilled)
- evaluates his/her own competence unrealistically and is unable to receive feedback

Part one 1: clinical training, 6 credits
Participation in the orientation session, setting goals and scheduling shifts on time, completing the required placement hours, participating in reflection, taking part in evaluation discussions, and submitting placement documentation on time.

Part 2 Finnish Language Enhancement Workshop before Clinical Placement
Part 3 Written Assignment

Teaching methods
Supervised clinical training/ accredited work-based / accredited prior learning placement, participation in the supervised placement according to the required number of hours. In supervised clinical training, 4 weeks, 153 hours in clinical settings.
Mandatory participation in orientation and reflection discussions.
Written assignment (1op).
Completion and presentation of the medication competence passport.
The course implementation plan will be updated before the course orientation.
Learning materials
Materials related to the courses connected to the content of the placement, materials assigned by the teacher, and orientation materials from the placement providers.
Student workload
Clinical training is 9 is worth 7 credits and consists of a four-week (6 credits) placement and a written assignment worth 1 credit.
The total number of hours for the 4 week placement is 162 hours, which includes orientation, final reflection, and Finnish as a Second Language (S2) guidance and goal setting.
The number of hours worked during the placement itself is 153 hours.
If a student completes the placement by accrediting work done as a substitute nurse, the substitution must be four weeks long with a working time of 38 hours and 15 minutes per week.
Completion alternatives
The clinical training can be carried out as a planned paid placement in a nurse’s employment after completing 140 ECTS credits (through accreditation of prior learning or by studification).
Practical training and working life cooperation
In Clinical training 9, the student may complete the training as supervised clinical training, through accreditation of prior learning, or by studification. Accreditation of prior learning and studification can be carried out as a planned paid placement in a nurse’s employment once the student has completed 140 ECTS credits.
Before the start of each training period, the student must have participated in the theoretical nursing studies relevant to that particular training environment. If the training is completed as supervised practical training, the placement is booked according to the instructions in the Nursing Guided Practical Trainings Moodle, either via Jobiili or outside Jobiili. The placement must be confirmed before the start of the training. The student must contact the placement provider before the start of the training in accordance with the placement’s instructions in Jobiili.
Detailed instructions for completing training through accreditation of prior learning or accrediting work experience can be found in the Nursing Guided Practical Trainings Moodle. The student must agree on such arrangements with their tutor teacher well in advance.
