Objectives (course unit)

The objective of the course is to develop basic knowledge of the structure and function of the circulatory and respiratory systems.

After completing the course, the student
• understands the structure of basic tissue types and how they form organs
• knows the structure and function of the blood, cardiovascular system and respiratory system
• knows the key concepts and vocabulary of the course in Finnish

Content (course unit)

• tissues
• structure and function of blood and the circulatory system
• structure and function of the respiratory system
• key vocabulary in Finnish

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student
• recognizes basic tissue types, can name them and understands the way they form the organs
• understands the basics of the structure and function of blood, circulatory and respiratory system

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student
• knows the structure and functions of tissues
• knows the structure and function of blood, circulatory system and respiratory system
• can describe the relationship between various functions in the human body and apply acquired knowledge

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student
• understands the structure and significance of tissues broadly in terms of the overall functioning of the entire body
• has an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of the human circulatory and respiratory systems
• can apply their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, demonstrates mastery of overall concepts and is able to integrate theoretical knowledge into a professional context

Exam schedules

The anatomy and physiology exam is taken in the TUNI EXAM classroom in week 48-2025 (Mon-Sat).
Retake 1: week 50-2025 (Mon-Sat, Exam)
Retake 2: week 1-2026 (Mon-Sat, Exam)
The student has two retake opportunities. The exam is taken via their own implementation number link.

The student has the right to increase the approved grade once and the increase takes place during the implementation retake weeks. The grade increase takes place in Exam and registration is made at least two weeks before the start of the increase period to the implementation teacher by email.

Assessment methods and criteria

Anatomy and physiology is assessed on the basis of a written examination. Assessment 0-5. Grade 1 requires 50% of the maximum points.
Objectives:
- The student knows the structure and function of human organ systems and is able to form an image of the human being as a physical functional entity.
- He/She knows the most important terms of anatomy and physiology.
- The student is able to apply the above-mentioned knowledge both when studying and when carrying out nursing work.
- The student learns to make use of different sources in obtaining information both independently and together with fellow students.
- The student learns to use the time intended for independent study effectively.

Assessment scale

0-5

Teaching methods

Teaching 12 hrs in Teams/Zoom as a distant teaching, or as contact (classroom) teaching according to the schedule.
Independent study approxim.40 hrs.
Exams and retake exams are organized in the TUNI EXAM system during a specific time period (approximately one work week) according to the schedule.
Allotted time for completing the exam: 115 min.

The course includes contact teaching and independent work by the student. Contact teaching is designed so that the lessons cover the subject area that the student has previously studied independently. A prerequisite for learning is that the student familiarizes himself with the topic of the lesson in advance, for example by studying the topic in a book and doing possible assignments. In contact teaching, the most important and difficult issues are addressed by reflecting, asking questions, and discussing

Student workload

Two (2) credit points equals 54 hours of work from a student.
Voluntary contact teaching 12 hrs.
NOTE! Participation at the orientation lecture L1 is mandatory!
Independent study.
Exam 115 min.

Content scheduling

Contact lectures (L) are carried out in 2 x 45 min periods (exception: Lecture 5 is scheduled as a 4 x 45min session): Some of the topics can be found in the self-study materials.
L1: Orientation. Tissues. Mandatory participation.
L2: Composition of blood
L3: Cardiovascular system
L4: Blood vessels and blood pressure
L5: Respiratory system + Review

Further information

The content of the course will be reviewed in the first class, and attendance at the orientation (Lecture 1) is mandatory. If you have to be absent from the orientation, for example due to illness, please find out about the course from a fellow student who is also taking the same course. Otherwise, participation in the contact teaching is voluntary.

The anatomy and physiology part includes contact teaching and the student's independent work. Contact teaching is designed so that the lessons review the subject area that the student has studied in advance. A prerequisite for learning is that the student familiarizes himself with the topic of the class, for example by studying the topic from a book and doing possible tasks. In contact teaching, the most important and most difficult issues are addressed by reflecting, asking questions and discussing.

NOTE! Distance learning is distance learning and contact teaching is contact teaching. Contact teaching cannot be done remotely.
