Objectives (course unit)

This course introduces the basic technological principles of animating and effecting moving image.

The student knows the basic technological industry practices. The student will understand the processes needed to technically produce material for VFX and animation. Software tools include entry-level 2D animation, 3D graphics and compositing tools.

Content (course unit)

Lectures and hands-on practices on the following topics: compositing, fundamentals of animation
and Visual Effects software, cinematography and rendering technology.
The AI-generated video and still materials will be covered in the lectures. The student will understand the following processes:

• From static layouts to moving elements
• Storyboarding and animatics
• Keyframing and tweening
• Rendering elements to different platforms

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

Knowing most of the basic principles of compositing and animation techniques and being able to produce VFX and animation materials based on those principles.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

Understanding and recognising the principles of animation and compositing. Ability to produce material according to the principles of compositing and animation techniques and the end results follow well the needs of VFX and animation storytelling.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

All compositing and animation techniques are being adapted in the materials produced by the student.

The student is able to implement them independently and understands how they are enhancing the audio-visual storytelling.

Based on this understanding, creative and genuine content is being developed.

Location and time

The course will be run in Mediapolis campus, mostly on site. The course will be finished by the end of the first period. The starting date is on week 34.

There is an online moodle-implementation for the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student course input will be graded based on the course tasks, activity and creative input.

Teaching methods

Lectures, hands-on-practices, course task. Online platform, Moodle, will be used during the course.

Learning materials

The online teaching materials including links, digital presentations and videos will be provided in the Moodle.

Completion alternatives

Competence based crediting is an alternative way to get credited. In that case contact the lecturer in charge to apply for credit transfer for competence.
