Objectives (course unit)
The course prepares students for reading, evaluating and utilising scientific information in nursing.
After completing the course, the student
• Is able to identify, search, evaluate and utilise health care information sources.
• Understands the importance of evidence-based practice in nursing.
• Knows evidence-based clinical guidelines in health care.

Approved completion of the small-group assignment
The small-group assignment must be completed and submitted to the Moodle platform according to the instructions and within the agreed schedule. One submission per group is sufficient. The submission must include the names of all contributors.
The library pre-assignments must be completed. Attendance at the library information specialist’s session is mandatory.

Teaching methods
Contact teaching delivered as in-person or remote instruction: 14 hours, plus orientation sessions (2 hours with a nursing teacher + 1 hour with a writing communication teacher).
Additionally, there is a mandatory writing communication workshop (2 hours per student).
Independent study: 34 hours.

Student workload
Mandatory orientation sessions (2 hours with a nursing teacher + 1 hours with a writing communication teacher).
14 hours of scheduled teaching: during these sessions, students will also work on the required small-group assignment. Attendance is mandatory for all sessions. Group allocation and assignment instructions will be provided during the orientation session. The teaching hours include a mandatory information retrieval session (2 hours).
In addition, each student must attend one writing communication workshop (2 hours per student).
Independent study: 34 hours.
Content scheduling
Orientation sessions (mandatory attendance for both the nursing teacher’s and the writing communication teacher’s sessions).
Lesson 1: Scientific knowledge; theory of structured information retrieval (mandatory attendance).
Lesson 2: Library information retrieval instruction (mandatory attendance); includes pre-assignments in the library’s Moodle. Students will receive detailed instructions about the pre-assignments during the orientation.
Lesson 3: Good scientific practice and small-group assignment workshop (mandatory attendance).
Lesson 4: Evidence-based practice in social and health care and small-group assignment workshop (mandatory attendance).
Lesson 5: Small-group seminars.
Writing communication small-group sessions.

Further information
-If the small-group assignment is not submitted or if the student does not attend the library information specialist’s lecture, the student will not receive credit for the course.
-The small-group assignment must be submitted according to the agreed schedule.
-The library information specialist’s lecture includes pre-assignments, which must be completed before the lecture. Absence from the library information specialist’s lecture must be compensated in another implementation.
-The implementation plan will be finalized by the orientation session; changes are possible!
