Objectives (course unit)

The student understands the importance of 3D printing in digital business e.g. in digital spare parts services, global product design and production.

Students will understand the importance of 3D printing to enable sustainable business operations such as manufacturing optimal and more efficient products, reduced transportation and reduced inventory.

The student is able to design products taking into account the 3D printability of the piece and the possibilities offered by 3D printing.
Students master the typical commands and operations used for 3D printable body modeling and design, including surface modeling and the efficient use of various Shell and Loft commands.

Design emphasizes and focuses on the specifics of 3D printing and the basics of song/product optimization. Students deepen their knowledge of working in a PDM/PLM environment.
The student:
• knows the basics and concepts of 3D printing
• knows the steps of 3D printing can independently use a desktop 3D printer
• the student can recognize the possibilities and limitations of 3D printing.
• be able to design products taking into account 3D printing
• can design products/pieces using typical operations in 3D song design
• can effectively use PDM/PLM environment.

Content (course unit)

The course covers the basics, concepts and printing techniques of 3D printing. In the course, self-designed pieces are printed in 3D.

The course implements effective 3D modeling techniques using commonly used modeling operations. During the course, products are modeled and designed in a PDM environment, taking into account manufacturability, compositability, and 3D printing, as well as the opportunities and constraints created by 3D printing in product design.

Prerequisites (course unit)

3D Product Design course with completed or equivalent skills.

Further information (course unit)

The main language of instruction is Finnish, but much of the material is also in English.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student recognizes the basics, technologies, concepts and stages of industrial 3D-printing (AM, additive method). The student can design a part for printing and print with assistance if necessary.

The student identifies the most important basic concepts and operation used in 3D-design. The student is aware of ways to produce 3-dimensional geometry with the design program and performs the given modeling and drawing tasks, assisted if necessary.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

Students master the areas of industrial 3D printing and are able to apply their skills when designing new products. The student recognizes the potential of 3D printing in the development of the company's business.

Students will be able to design taking into account printability, the possibilities offered by 3D printing, and print a piece.

The student is able to produce good 3-dimensional geometry and, as a rule, performs independently the given modeling and design tasks.

The student recognizes the benefits of the PDM system and makes use of the system at different stages of the design process

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

Students are well-versed in the areas of industrial 3D printing and are able to apply their skills when designing new products.

The student is able to find out and develop the meaning, possibilities and limitations of 3D printing of the company, in the manufacture of products and in business.

The student produces flawless 3-dimensional geometry and is able to produce demanding and complex 3D-printable pieces, as well as independently perform given design tasks..
