Objectives (course unit)

The student knows the technical properties of different material groups and the method used to select the materials suitable for the particular structure. Practical laboratory work is done during the course. For example, changing the properties of metal materials by means of heat treatment, as well as research methods for the properties of the most common technical materials.

Content (course unit)

The course focuses on the properties and use of technical materials. The core material of the course is steels, cast irons, other metals and the most common polymers, elastomers and composites. In the laboratory part of the course, the elastic and plastic deformation of materials, heat treatment and research methods of metal materials are studied in practice. In addition, the theory material of the course includes e.g. equilibrium diagrams, phase changes and the most common material testing methods in materials science.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

Knows technical materials and their properties. Can, under guidance, apply the theoretical background to one of the practice and work tasks of laboratory work. Recognizes important operating methods for one's field and knows preliminary industrial manufacturing techniques suitable for each material based on previous studies and/or work experience.
Developable communication and teamwork skills

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

Knows technical materials and their properties well. Can apply the theoretical background to one of the practice and work tasks of laboratory work. Can choose the most appropriate procedure from different material options and manufacturing techniques and justify their choice.
Can cooperate responsibly and develop interaction skills.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

Understands the properties and manufacturing techniques of the materials used in mechanical engineering in a broad area. Knows how to choose materials suitable for a specific structure and understands the meaning of new solutions and applies the common knowledge to find them. Is able to combine the theoretical background learned through an independent work sample together in practice and work tasks of laboratory work.
Can cooperate responsibly, flexibly and constructively. Develops both own and group interaction
