Objectives (course unit)
The aim of the study course is to know how to plan wood harvesting for different felling sites, to draw up harvesting work instructions and to understand how wood harvesting operations are managed.
After completing the course, the student:
• understands the significance of stand-level planning as part of the wood procurement chain
• can assess the volume of standing timber and the timber species-specific logging yield for different logging methods
• can take into account the laws governing the use of economic forests, the requirements of forest certification, and various recommendations in the planning and implementation of timber harvesting
• can plan timber harvesting for different logging sites, create harvesting instructions, and understand how timber harvesting operations are managed
• knows how the chosen silvicultural method affects timber harvesting
• is familiar with information systems for harvesting planning and control, and can evaluate the success of implemented measures
• can evaluate the success of implemented measures
Content (course unit)
Stand-level planning and its significance, assessment of logging yield, laws governing the management of economic forests, importance of forest certification and recommendations, planning exercises, utilization of geospatial devices and systems, excercises in chaining stands, consideration of specific features of peatlands, and evaluation exercises of logging impact.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student can, with some assistance, assess the volume of standing timber in a logging area and knows how to calculate logging yields for different timber species, knows the key laws governing the use of economic forests, forest management recommendations, and the requirements of forest certification in timber harvesting. He/she can, with assistance, plan timber harvesting for different logging sites and create harvesting instructions. The student can evaluate the success of implemented measures
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student can assess the volume of standing timber and logging yields for different timber species in a logging area. He/she can take into account the laws guiding the use of economic forests, forestry recommendations, and the requirements of forest certification in the planning and execution of timber harvesting. The student is capable of planning timber harvesting for various logging sites, creating harvesting instructions, and understanding how to manage the operations of timber harvesting. They are familiar with information systems for harvesting planning and control, and they can develop a harvesting program. Furthermore, the student can evaluate the success of implemented measures.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student is capable of assessing the volume of standing timber and logging yields for different timber species in a logging area. He/she can take into account the laws guiding the use of economic forests, forestry recommendations, and the requirements of forest certification in the planning and execution of timber harvesting. Moreover, the student can comprehensively communicate and justify these considerations to forest owners and harvesting implementers. He/she is able to plan timber harvesting for various logging sites, create harvesting instructions, and understand how to manage the operations of timber harvesting. Additionally, the student can use information systems for harvesting planning and control, comprehending the multifaceted nature of developing a harvesting program. Furthermore, he/she can evaluate the success of implemented measures.
