Basics of Information Technology (2cr)

Objectives (course unit)

After completing the course, the student understands the basics of operating systems, is able to configure operating system features and use command line. The course covers topics such as file systems, file structures, program installation, configuration, and the basics of using a terminal and its command line.

After completing the course, the student will be able to:
• install and configure programs
• solve problems using the command line
• change the settings of the operating system

• Basics of operating systems
• Processes and related channels stdin, stdout, stderr
• Change the settings of the operating system
• Use of terminals and remote programs
• Command line
• Software and their installation

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student understands the basics of an operating system, its main functions, configuration, software installation, remote connections, and the use of the command line.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student is able to
• flexibly use the functions of the operating system, modify its settings, install and configure demanding software packages,
• use the command line extensively.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student is able to
• use advanced functions of the operating system,
• modify its deeper settings (e.g. using registers or system files),
• install and configure complex software,
• write basic command-line based programs.

Assessment methods and criteria

Opintojakson arviointi asteikolla 1-5. Opintojakson perusarvosanat (1-2) voi suorittaa palauttamalla harjoituksia (Github). Arvosanojen 3-5 osaaminen osoitetaan tentillä.

GITHUB:

Arvosana 1: Git osaaminen (Github 10 files, 50 commits).
Arvosana 2: Git osaaminen (Github 20 files, 100 commits).

Vain määräaikaan palautetut, opintojakson ohjeiden mukaiset, tehtävät arvioidaan. Ohjeet löytyvät opintojakson Moodle-sivulta.

TENTTI:

Valinnainen tentti, joka kattaa opintojakson luennot, tuntiharjoitukset ja itsenäiset tehtävät (tasks). Tentti on mahdollista arvioida, jos arvosanaa 2 vastaavat tehtävät ovat palautettu hyväksytysti ennen tentin alkamista.

Arvosana 3: osaaminen osoittaminen ja 50 % tehtävistä,
Arvosana 4: osaaminen osoittaminen ja 80 % tehtävistä,
Arvosana 5: osaaminen osoittaminen ja 100 % tehtävistä.

Hyväksytty tenttisuoritus sisältää asian syvällisen ymmärtämisen. Osaaminen osoitetaan selittämällä sanallisesti joko luentoihin tai tehtäviin liittyvät kysymykset. Kysymysten kohdalla on pystyttaävä perustelemaan käytetyt toimintatavat, demonstroimaan tehtävän ratkaisun eri vaiheet, selittämään tuotokset sekä osoittamaan aiheen hallintaa riittävällä tasolla.
