Objectives (course unit)

After completing the course, the student
• understand the most important geotechnical concepts and phenomena related to foundation construction
• can describe the different foundation methods of a building and identify the factors affecting the choice of foundation method
• knows how to measure the ground foundation of a conventional building in accordance with the Eurocode
• can describe the necessary drainage and frost protection measures in foundation structures
• identify the most common quality requirements related to foundation construction
• can describe the most common types of piles, their applications, installation methods, dimensioning principles and testing methods
• can explain the causes of risks related to excavation work and knows ways to manage risks
• can describe different types of trenches and their uses
• can describe the most common base strengthening methods

Content (course unit)

Foundation methods and calculation of bearing capacity
Slump as a phenomenon and calculation of slump
Statement of Incorporation
Drainage of the building foundation and plot area, drainage and surface leveling plan
Frost as a phenomenon and design and dimensioning of frost protection
Quality requirements for foundation structures
Sealing work and tightness
Pile foundations
Base strengthening methods at a general level
Trenches, trench safety and earth pressure
Radon as a phenomenon and protection measures

Prerequisites (course unit)

5R00GQ52 Introduction to Geotecnical Engineering or equivalent knowledge

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student recognizes and defines different ways of building a building.
The student will identify the most important drainage and frost protection measures related to the foundation.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

In addition to recognizing the basic concepts, the student will be able to use a supervisor / instructor to design a simple underground sensor foundation and identify the most important quality criteria related to the foundations of building a house.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

In addition to the above, the student will have a good understanding of the factors that influence the choice of how a building is constructed and the quality requirements of the building's ground structures. The student will also be able to evaluate the risks associated with the ground work and know how to manage the risks.
