Objectives (course unit)
The student knows the general design principles of structures and knows the role of a structural engineer in a construction project. The student knows the most common frame types and structural solutions of buildings.
The student knows how to determine the loads and load combinations on buildings and understands the principle of structural safety. The student knows the most common bracing methods and understands the operating principles of bracing frame structures. The student knows the strength technical properties of the most important frame materials. The student knows how to dimension the simplest concrete, wood and steel beams for bending and cutting in the ultimate limit state. He/ she also knows the basics of buckling. He/ she understands the differences between fracture analysis and serviceability limit state analysis. The student knows the drawing markings used in the design of structures.
Content (course unit)
Basics and scope of structural design, laws and regulations, frame solutions and structural models, loads and load combinations, structural safety, strength technical properties of materials, basics of concrete, wood and steel structure design, bracing methods and bracing principles and content of structural plans. Masonry structures, foundations.
Prerequisites (course unit)
5R00GQ45 Basics of Statics and 5R00GQ46 Strength of Materials or equivalent knowledge
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student clearly understands the design principles of structures and knows how to define load combinations.
The student knows how to dimension simple wooden, reinforced concrete and steel beams for bending and cutting in the ultimate limit state and can determine the deflections of the beams in the service limit state.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student understands well the design principles of structures and knows well how to determine load combinations.
The student knows how to dimension simple wood, reinforced concrete and steel beams for bending and cutting in the ultimate limit state well, and knows how to determine beam deflections well in the service limit state.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student understands the design principles of structures excellently and knows how to determine load combinations excellently.
The student knows how to dimension simple wooden, reinforced concrete and steel beams for bending and cutting in the ultimate limit state excellently, and knows how to determine beam deflections in the service limit state excellently.
The student is also excellent at justifying the solution methods he uses.
