Objectives (course unit)
The objective of the course is to familiarize oneself with the basic methods of molecular biology and their applications in clinical diagnostics.
After completion of the course the student:
• knows the key methods used in molecular biology and perform practical exercises under supervision
• knows the basics of recombinant DNA technology and its main applications
• knows the steps of nucleic acid purification
• describes the basics of amplification methods
• knows the basics of hybridization and sequencing methods
• knows how methods of molecular biology are applied in clinical diagnostics.
Content (course unit)
• Human genome, chromosomal structure, gene structure and expression, common types of mutations
• Molecular biology samples
• Isolation and purification of nucleic acids
• Amplification methods, electrophoresis
• Sequencing and hybridization
• Applications of molecular biology in clinical diagnostics
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student is capable of searching for information from relevant sources within the field and sharing their expertise with the group. The student demonstrates attainment of the core competency objectives. They possess knowledge of basic molecular biology methods and are aware of their common applications in diagnostics. Additionally, the student has knowledge of ethical issues and legislation within the field. They are able to perform common basic molecular biology methods in the laboratory under supervision and demonstrate safe laboratory practices.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student is capable of independently seeking information and critically utilizing relevant sources within the field, and effectively applying their expertise to the group's objectives. They consistently employ industry terminology and knowledge. The student understands the principles of basic molecular biology methods and is knowledgeable about factors influencing them. They can explain key research methods and common applications in diagnostics, and can apply their knowledge in professional tasks. The student is well-versed in ethical issues and legislation within the field. Under supervision, they can apply common basic molecular biology methods in the laboratory, act responsibly, and plan their activities with consideration for safe laboratory practices.

The student adeptly utilizes industry terminology and knowledge, effectively contributing their expertise to the group's objectives while also organizing group activities. They possess a thorough understanding of the principles of basic molecular biology methods and factors influencing them. They can apply their knowledge in professional tasks and justify their actions based on acquired learning and researched information.
