Objectives (course unit)
Students
- know how to act in communication situations in the working life (e.g. e-mails)
- know the basic business English vocabulary and are able to present a topic from their field of study (e.g. company, process)
- know the most important vocabulary of their field of study

English for laboratory professionals 1 or corresponding skills.
Location and time
Contact tessons at TAMK on Tuesdays from 8 to 10. Check the timetable for any changes.

Resit exams:
1 retake in January 2026
2. retake in February 2026
A passing grade can be improved once, and a failing grade retaken twice on the retake exam dates determined by the teacher. The dates will be specified once the need for retake exams is assessed.
Assessment methods and criteria
Passing grade 1-5
To pass this course, complete the following assignments:
-written exam, 30 % of the final grade
-spoken exam 40 % of the final grade
-group project 30 % of the final grade
80% of the homework has to be submitted.
-attendance in the contact lessons.
One can be absent twice from the contact lessons. If there are more absences, they must be compensated by attending the classes of another suitable course with the same teacher. Serious cases of illness will be handled separately. Absences cannot be compensated with extra assignments.
The homework package and the correct answers (key) will be announced on Moodle. The teacher will check that the assignments have been submitted to the submission platform by the deadline. The student must check the correctness of the assignments themselves and ask questions if needed. Homework cannot be submitted via the teacher’s email or after the correct answers have been provided. Insufficient completion of homework may affect the grade.

Teaching methods
contact lessons, on-line studies on Moodle, spoken and written tasks individually and in pairs / groups, written and spoken exam, presenting an article to the rest of the group (group work).
Learning materials
Course material is given on Moodle. Students are asked to find and produce suitable study material.
Student workload
3 x 27 hours = 81 hours
These hours include contact lessons, homework, group work and preparing for the tests.
Completion alternatives
Accreditation Procedure
• English language courses completed during previous higher education studies
• Exchange programme abroad, studies of one's own field in English
• English language skills acquired, for example, through work.
In these situations, contact the teacher no later than the beginning of the course. Accrediation is not possible after the contact teaching of the course is over.
The course can be replaced by a Fast Track to Professional English Course. Fast Track is a mostly on-line, highly independent course, aimed at advanced students.
