Objectives (course unit)
The aim of the course is to learn about the structure of biomolecules and the chemical reactions that take place in the cell, as well as to become familiar with biochemical analysis methods.
After completing the course, the student will be able to
• know the structure of biomolecules
• understand the significance of biomolecules as part of the cell’s structure and function
• know the principles and mechanisms of genetic information transfer
• know the principles of enzyme function and regulation
• define the most common reactions of metabolism, and understand their significance
• know the principles of the most common methods used in protein analytics
Prerequisites (course unit)
Organic Chemistry
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student is able to identify biomolecule classes and know their most important functions in the cell. The student knows at a basic level how genes control cell function. The student knows the basic principles of enzyme function and cell metabolism. The student knows some methods of protein analysis and knows what they can be used for.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student is able to identify biomolecule classes, describe the basic structure of biomolecules and their functions in the cell. The student understands the key principles and mechanisms of genetic information transfer. The student knows the most important metabolic pathways and their importance for the cell. The student has an overall picture of how cells work. The student knows the principles of the most important methods of protein analysis and knows what they can be used for.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student is able to identify different classes of biomolecules. He can describe the structure of biomolecules in detail. He understands the reactions of biomolecules and can extensively describe the functions and importance of biomolecules. The student is able to explain the principles and mechanisms of genetic information transfer. The student knows the key metabolic pathways of the cell and understands how they interact with each other. The student has a good overall picture of how cells work. The student knows the principles of protein analysis methods and knows how to evaluate the applicability of the methods and error sources.

Campbell, Mary K., Shawn O. Farrell, and Owen McDougal. Biochemistry. 9th edition. Boston: Cengage Learning, 2016. Kurssilla käsitellään tämän kirjan kappaleita 1, 3-12, 15-23 soveltuvin osin. Myös saman kirjan aikaisempia painoksia voi käyttää.
Vaihtoehtoisesti luentojen rinnalla voi lukea jotain seuraavista oppikirjoista (soveltuvin osin):
Appling, Dean R, Christopher K Mathews, and Spencer J Anthony-Cahill. Biochemistry: Concepts and Connections. New York, NY: Pearson, 2019. (Saatavilla verkossa TUNI kirjaston kautta)
Heino, Jyrki, Matti Vuento, and Jyrki Heino. Biokemia ja solubiologia. [1.-2. painos]. Helsinki: Sanoma Pro, 2020. (Saatavilla verkossa TUNI kirjaston kautta)
Student workload
Kontaktiopetusta n. 45 h
