Objectives (course unit)
The aim of the course is to learn the basics of power plant thermodynamics and operation.
After completing the course, the student will be able to
• understand the properties of water vapour
• explain the basics of the power plant process and solve mathematical problems in thermodynamics
• apply the physical laws of heat transfer and evaporation to the process industry, know the equipment solutions and the sizing of equipment
• apply his/her knowledge in energy matters
Content (course unit)
Basic concepts of thermodynamics. Equations of state and state changes of gases and the main rules of thermodynamics with applications.
Thermodynamics of humid air. Heat transfer phenomena and their coupling and heat transfer applications with apparatus. Equipment dimensioning.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
Upon completion of the course, students will understand the basics of power plant thermodynamics and operation.
The student will be able to name the properties of water vapour. The student will be able to solve simple mathematical problems in thermodynamics. The student will know the basic principles of power plant equipment solutions and equipment sizing.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
Upon completion of the course, the student will understand the thermodynamics and operation of a power plant.
The student will understand the properties of water vapour and how they relate to the availability of water vapour. The student will be able to solve mathematical problems in thermodynamics.
The student will be able to apply the physical laws of heat transfer and evaporation to the needs of the process industry, and will be familiar with equipment solutions and sizing criteria.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
After completing the course, students will be able to apply the laws of thermodynamics to a wide range of processes.
