Objectives (course unit)

The course is aimed to familiarize newly admitted international students to TAMK with soft and basic issues which will assist them to understand and adapt to the learning environment of TAMK and settling life in Tampere.

Learning outcomes:
The newly admitted international students will:
- start using TAMK online learning platform i.e., Moodle
- meet each other online and will share their own experiences and expectations
- learn TAMK’s teaching and learning methods: lecture, teamwork, individual work, presentation, exams etc.
- meeting with representatives of TAMK’s English taught programmes
- come across to Finnish higher education culture
- know to deal with cultural shock
- get prepared for studies at TAMK

Content (course unit)

The course will focus to the following topics:
- online learning platform
- Finnish education system
- culture in higher education
- handling cultural shock
- study methods
- teamwork
- self-management in studies
- strategic career planning
- programme specific day / meeting with representatives of English taught programmes

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

Pass: The student does required course tasks. Attend to activity days
Fail: The student is unable to do suggested course tasks. Without reason does not attend to face to face lessons.

Location and time

Will be informed to the students once registration to the course has been done.

Exam schedules

No exam. Attendance to contact lessons, participation to off campus activities and assignments are basis to pass the course.

Teaching methods

The course is contact lesson based. However, there will be possibility to join online. Theoretical lessons will be held at TAMK campus. Practical activities will be taking place outside the TAMK campus.
