Objectives (course unit)

- To identify the customer needs and translate of the lean improvements into quality parameters
- To study, test and quantitatively assess the impact of different LEAN improvement options
- To apply and pilot the DMAIC cycle in your work or projects
- To investigate and manage process deviations and to evaluate lean project risks

Content (course unit)

- recognize and apply LEAN practices and methods in your work or projects
- plan for LEAN transfer and tests
- make LEAN tests
- complete a final LEAN project plan for piloting lean in your work or projects
- assess the impact of LEAN

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The submission fails to address the assignment. The submission does not consider other alternatives.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The submission addresses the problem in the case with several appropriate solutions. Each solution is considered and the advantages and disadvantages each solution are clearly explained. A recommendation is made as the most appropriate solution with an explanation. The solution identifies the cause of the problem.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

Additional insights, analysis, synthesis or hypothesis are given. E.g. The long-term consequences of the solution are considered. Recommendations for action to avoid a repeat of the problem are provided.

Exam schedules

There is no exam in this course.
Students finishing course participating on DMAIC (or lean) project will get Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certificate.

Teaching methods

Online orientation meeting in the beginning and projct presentations for each group in the end of the course.
Online course, with materials and tasks in Moodle, https://moodle.tuni.fi
Online interim exams.
As a project, process development from a lean perspective (Preferably DMAIC)
Scheduled supporting teams-meetings.

Learning materials

Appropriate litterature, books and articles and internet resources.

Student workload

One credit corresponds 27 hours student work.

Content scheduling

Some of the assignments and discussion tasks have deadlines. In case student is not able to meet deadlines, she/he will automatically considered to drop out the course. Please, if you are not able to meet the deadlines, contact the teachers BEFOREHAND and suggest a new deadline. These arrangements has to be negotiated beforehand.

Practical training and working life cooperation

Project is supposed to do to a partner company. Choose an organization where you are working or been worked. This is to empower ability on improvement ideas and suggestions.
Project can be done individually or by 2-4 persons group.
During the course, support from Lean Six Sigma Black Belt is available for DMAIC project.
