Objectives (course unit)

Students
- know changes of society and how they affect a family
- are aware of the effects of an illness on children and family
- know the effects of illnesses on movement and functional ability of a child or an adolescent and on the whole development of an individual
- are able to find evidence based knowledge and to use it in physiotherapy
- are able to select appropriate and effective assessment strategies for movement abilities and the functions of a child or an adolescent and are able to use clinical reasoning and to plan treatment strategies
- know the effects of the most common medication for children’s’ diseases

Content (course unit)

-socioemotional and psychological disorders of children and adolescents and psycho-physical aspects in physiotherapy
-neuropsychiatric disorders of children and adolescents and physiotherapy
-physiotherapy of the musculoskeletal system in children and adolescents
-physiotherapy of neurological diseases in children and adolescents
-the most common medicines for children’s illnesses

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

Evaluation criteria, Satisfactory (1-2):
The student:
- identifies and defines the key points of the physiotherapy content, basic concepts and phenomena of physiotherapy for children and adolescents, but active structuring of information is difficult
- poorly identifies and describes the principles of ICF for the abilities of the child and the adolescent
- does not prepare well for situations
- participates in the group for goal-oriented activities
- only partially identifies their interaction skills and professional activity

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

Evaluation criteria, Good (3-4):
The student
- is able to structure describing in writing the links between information and phenomena of physiotherapy for children and adolescents
- mainly knows the principles of ICF for the functioning capacity of a child and adolescent
- is able to utilise earlier knowledge, new research data and the best methods in the field of physiotherapy for children and adolescents
- prepares carefully and systematically for study situations
- develops their interaction skills and take responsibility for issues related to studies

Evaluation criteria, Excellent (5):
The student:
- is able to combine previous knowledge, new research data and best methods in a flexible, creative and purposeful way in the field of physiotherapy for children and adolescents
- is able to define the principles of ICF in the functioning capacity of a child and adolescent
- is able to evaluate their own skills in a developing way, and shows willingness to improve their professional competence
- works in collaboration responsibly, flexibly and constructively, and understands the limits of their own physiotherapeutic competence in multiprofessional collaboration

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

A failed mark is the result of the student presenting inadequate knowledge of basic knowledge. Application of knowledge is flawed. The student avoids active participation during learning situations. Preparation is neglected, and feedback is not taken into consideration.

Tuni Moodle platform will be used.

Exam schedules

Examination of theory on 18.9.2024
Tutor work is evaluated on week 38 and seminar presentations with tutorgroups on 20.9.2024
The final independent written assignment and presentations on November 2024.

Assessment methods and criteria

Theory midterm exam (1-5)
Tutor work (1-5) and seminar presentation in a group (pass-fail)
Written report and presentation (1-5) + peer review (passed/failed)
Online course of assistive devices (pass-fail)

The course will have one number/mark. Average: theory test (33%), tutor work (33%) and written final report (33%)

Teaching methods

Independent studies 1-4.8.2024 (week 31). Tasks for independent studies will be given on May 2024.
Teaching at school starts on Monday 5.8.2024.
Teaching methods: Problem based learning (PBL) - Lectures, discussions in groups, independent work, PBL tutorials, seminars, online learning

Learning materials

Study material and literature will be found from Moodle platform.

Student workload

Theory part 7 ECTS = 189 hours.

Content scheduling

Independent tasks week 31 : 1-4.8.2024.

Tutoring sessions will take place once a week according to the timetable. First tutoring session on Monday 5.8 at 12.30 together.

Teaching starts 5.8.2024 and after clinical training period .

Themes: Neurological physiotherapy, musculo-sceletal physiotherapy, physiotherapy in breathing problems and psychophycial and mental probelms of children and adolescent. Body awareness experiences.

Embodiment and experientialism will run throughout the period.

Students attending the course will participate in all mandatory orientations including neuro and musculo-sceletal physiotherapy orientations.

Applied movement and assistive devices will be studied theoretically through an online course and, where possible, practically.

Theoretical teaching continues after clinical training.

Practical training and working life cooperation

Some additional online course will be added later.
