Objectives (course unit)

Student
• attends basic small Talk in Finnish in connection with one's own daily life and partly already in connection with working life
• gets to know the vocabulary and language use in their field in more detail
• understands simple descriptions related to health, and well-being
• is familiar with and understands spoken language at least at a simple level

Content (course unit)

• reviewing and deepening previous studies
• key sentence structures
• professional vocabulary and language use in the field of physiotherapy
• the main differences between common language and spoken language

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

• The student completes at least some of the required coursework. However, the student may neglect to review the instructions and / or prepare for the coursework.
• The student demonstrates at least minor activity on the course. However, it is difficult for a student to complete coursework independently and smoothly.
• The student is able to demonstrate that he / she masters at least the most important and most recurring course topics and areas of competence. However, students have great difficulty in progressing their studies smoothly and quickly enough.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

• The student does at least most of the coursework in a smooth and orthodox way.
• The student participates in course work actively and concentrately.
• The student is able to demonstrate adequate and substantial progress in his / her studies. The student masters the main basics of language use in a commendable way.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

• The student does the course work in a smooth and orthodox way.
• The student participates in course work actively and concentrately. Student is interested in his / her studies and is happy to learn more about the topics he / she is studying.
• The student is able to demonstrate adequate and substantial progress in his / her studies. The student's progress in studies exceeds expectations.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

Failed
• The student does not do the required coursework.
• The student repeatedly shows indifference and disinterest in course work.
• The student is not able to show sufficient progress in their studies.

Location and time

The course usually has meetings twice a week. Sometimes the second meeting can be held in Zoom. Most of the meetings are 2 hours long and contact teaching in class. Sometimes we work in small groups (three-hour bookings). More on the schedule and instructions later.

Classes start in week 35, Tuesday 29.8. at 12:30, class H1-24
Time and place vary. Follow the reading order.

There may still be some changes because the teaching of another course needs to be arranged in the teacher's calendar, and a single two-hour meeting can be changed to three hours of work if it is possible and useful in terms of language learning.

Exam schedules

The final test 3.11. 2023 klo 9.15 - 11.45. A retake will be arranged if necessary.

Mainly classroom teaching and some online meetings.
Written course assignments vocabulary work, teamwork
The Final Exam (Written and speaking parts)


We practice speaking, listening comprehension, writing, and reading. We will focus on active language use and comprehension. Also some occupational language for presentation for the Course of Internal Medication and Palliative Nursing.






E.g. interviewing and guiding a back patient. Documentation in Finnish.

Practical training and working life cooperation

The goal of this course is to strengthen the Finnish language skills before going to the next internship.

The course is intended for international physiotherapy students (22 FYKEN)
