Objectives (course unit)

During the course, the students will learn about the processes of wood harvesting and long-distance transportation of timber, the equipment used, and the preparation of work programs for wood harvesting.

After completing the course, the student:
• knows how to carry out harvesting work plans
• knows how to use GIS in harvesting and in timber transport
• knows the main timber storage methods and their impact on raw material quality and the environment
• knows the equipment used in timber harvesting and timber transport and its applicability to different situations
• knows the principles of bucking control and knows how to interpret control files
• knows the forms and means of timber transport, as well as their feasibility to forest sector transport
• is familiar with the principles of transport control systems, and is able to make transport orders

Content (course unit)

Making work program for harvesting, harvesting and transportation equipment, information systems of forest machines, creating bucking files, using GIS, timber storage methods, information systems in controlling harvesting and transport, means of transport, the importance of forest roads and their maintenance, resource planning. Forest machine simulator exercises.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student knows the basics of timber transport modes and transport routes and wood storage methods. He knows the equipment used in harvesting and timber transport. The student is aware of the principles of harvester measurement and bucking optimization.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student knows the principles and information systems of logging and transportation control. He / she knows the modes of transport and transport routes as well as the ways of storing wood and their effects on the quality of the raw material and the environment. The student knows the equipment used in timber harvesting and transportation and their suitability in different situations. He / she knows the principles of harvester measurement and bucking control and he/ she can interpret control files. The student is able to make resource calculations and use geographic information in logging and long distance transport.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student knows comprehensively the principles and information systems of logging and transportation control, modes of transport and transportation routes and methods of storing wood. He / she understands the impact of storage time on different types of timber and knows how to take this information into account in planning. The student is able to choose the most suitable harvesting and long distance transport equipment in different situations. The student is able to independently make resource calculations and use geographic information for logging and long distance transportation planning

Erinomainen autoraportti voi korottaa kurssin kokonaisarvosanaa

Vierailut ja vierailijaluennot ovat pakollisia osasuorituksia 70% oltava paikalla. Poissaolot huomioidaan kurssin arvioinnissa 0,25 / poissaolo. Kahdesta vierailusta poissaolo laskee arvosanaa 0,5
