Objectives (course unit)

After completing the course, the student:
- knows the principles of drainage of ground structures and frost protection
- knows the steps involved in laying the foundations
- knows the main stages and methods of construction work
- is able to select and dimension the equipment needed for construction
- is familiar with land volume concepts and mass factors

Content (course unit)

Water occurrence in soil, drainage of buildings
- Ground and frost protection, frost protection of buildings
- Pile foundations
- Volume Concepts of Earth
- Construction Materials
- Excavation machinery
- The main stages of civil engineering work
- Reinforcement of the ground
- Mining and crushing

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

After completing the course, the student:
- understands the importance of drainage and the principles of frost protection
- knows the equipment and work stages most commonly used in construction
- can calculate simple soil volume conversions

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

In addition to the above, the student:
- Understand the importance of different components in sealing work and how seals and load capacities can be measured
- knows the factors affecting the choice of equipment and capacities for the most important stages of earthworks and is able to apply this information
- knows, in principle, when the different methods of soil reinforcement and pile foundation are used

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

In addition to the above, the student:
- is very active in classes and shows a particular interest in the topic
- the student has a good knowledge of all subject areas of the course
