Objectives (course unit)
The student is able to
- know the principles of microscopy and to use a microscope
- perform a cell count using a Bürker chamber
- know the pre-analytical factors and test indications of urine cell count and the most common body fluid tests
- know the clinical significance of urine cell count findings
- know the criteria for identifying urine cells and particles
- identify and name these findings under a microscope
- know the principles of quality control

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student has attended all practical training sessions and has performed all the practice exercises under supervision. The student knows the preanalytical factors of body fluid tests but has limited knowledge of the theoretical content of the module. The student knows the basic principles of cell counting and can perform cell counts under supervision. The student can microscopically identify leucocytes, erythrocytes, small epithelial cells, squamous epithelial cells and yeast at a basic level. The student can identify tubular cells and urinary casts under supervision. The student can identify urine microscopy findings only partially when using a microscope independently.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student has attended all practical training sessions and has participated actively. The student can perform the practice exercises almost independently and can justify his/her decisions. The student knows the preanalytical factors of body fluid tests and can explain their significance. The student has a good command of the theoretical content of the module and can analyse the theoretical knowledge related to the subject. The student knows the principles of cell counting and can perform relevant calculations. The student can microscopically identify leucocytes, erythrocytes, small epithelial cells, squamous epithelial cells and yeast at a basic level and can identify tubular cells and urinary casts. The student can identify almost all urine microscopy findings when using a microscope independently.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student has attended all practical training sessions and has participated actively. The student can perform the practice exercises independently, justify his/her decisions and solve problems that may arise. The student knows the preanalytical factors of body fluid tests and can explain their significance. The student has an excellent command of the theoretical content of the module. The student is thoroughly familiar with the principles of cell counting and can perform relevant calculations skilfully. The student can microscopically identify leucocytes, erythrocytes, small epithelial cells, squamous epithelial cells and yeast at a basic level and can identify tubular cells and urinary casts. The student can identify all urine microscopy findings when using a microscope independently and can justify his/her decisions.
