Objectives (course unit)
The student
- will understand the link between the language and situation
- knows different health care related text types and their language requirements
- will manage data search of different topics
- will be able to describe own background and competence in spoken and written form
- knows how to communicate in different situations in health care
- will develop and gain courage to communicate in Finnish in changing situations in health care
Content (course unit)
- main grammatical structures of own professional field, word derivation
- learning more vocabulary and terminology related to health care
- spoken and written communication situations in health care
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student copes with simple, everyday interaction situations in health care, both in written and spoken form. The student knows the vocabulary and grammatical structure of health care texts and uses them usually correctly. The student has developing professional language skills.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student copes with everyday interaction situations in health care, both in written and spoken form. The student knows central phrases, expressions and vocabulary well. The student masters required language structures used in health care and applies them in practice. The student acknowledges cultural differences in language use. The student actively develops professional language skills. The student takes part in discussions and completes the given assignments as agreed.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student masters different language situations in professional field. The student can consider situational requirements. The student uses different phrases, expressions and professional terminology in various ways. The student can fluently use more demanding language structures in spoken and written form. The student actively develops professional Finnish language skills in every actions.

Possibly some meetings during the internship period.
Some changes to the schedules may occur because the teaching of another course still needs to be added to the teacher's calendar.

Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation will be mainly based on the final exam (written part + speaking part). In unclear cases, the mid exam and overall course participation can either increase or decrease the grade.

We practise speaking, listening comprehension, writing, and reading. We will focus on active language use and comprehension also in occupational situations.

(Heidi Sippola, Nuppu-Maria Tuononen, Anu Mustonen, 3. edition 2021)
You need this book for homeworks and working in lessons. If it´s difficult to find book in libraries or buy you can also do co-operation and buy one book with small group and then write answers to paper or worddocument.

Student workload
You should prepare for the following schedule:
- Course meetings once a week.
- 3-6 hours of independent work (homework in the book, Moodle-tasks, videos) in each course week. Some homework may require working in pairs or in groups. The students themselves agree the time when they prepare, for example, a video.

This course is aimed for Nursing studens (Only for 22 NURFIL TOP -group) and the goal is to develop occupational nursing Finnish.
