Objectives (course unit)

The student
- knows the progression, physiology and mechanism of normal labour
- knows how to assess labor progression and the signs of abnormal progression
- knows the foetal wellbeing follow up methods and how to recognize the signs of foetal distress
- knows the methods of maternal wellbeing assessment during labour and how to support the development of positive birth experience
- knows the methods and principles of midwifery care during the normal labour
- knows the methods used in the assessment of the newborn baby status and the risks to the newborn baby wellbeing
- knows how to resuscitate the newborn baby
- knows how to observe and support early interaction between the family and newborn baby
- describes the principles of care in the abnormal labour

Content (course unit)

- progression of normal labour
- physiology and mechanism of labour
- assessment methods of labour progression
- screening and follow up of foetal and maternal wellbeing
- labour phases and midwifery care during each of these
- how to assess newborn baby status and wellbeing
- newborn baby requiring the special surveillance and resuscitation
- support of the positive birth experience
- midwifery in abnormal labour

Prerequisites (course unit)

The student must have completed 135 credits of nursing studies including Anatomy and Physiology and courses of Perioperative Nursing, Maternity Care and Gynaecological Nursing. Supervised clinical training could not be started before completing all theoretical and clinical nursing studies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student
- is able to describe the progression, physiology and mechanism of normal labour
- is able to describe the observation and care of the woman in labour and foetus
- describes the main points of midwifery care during labour and does not understand the importance of midwifery care for positive birth experience
- describes the principles of care in normal labour
- describes the basic concepts of normal and abnormal labour
- describes the methods used in the assessment of newborn baby status
- describes the meaning of early interaction for the families
- describes the principles of care in abnormal labour

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student
- is able to describe the progression, physiology and mechanism of normal labour
- describes and understands the meaning of the labour progress, maternal and foetal wellbeing follow up methods and midwifery care given
- is able to describe the principles of care during childbirth and to analyse midwifery care given
- describes the midwifery care during labour and knows the methods of positive birth experience support
- knows and uses the basic concepts of normal and abnormal labour in midwifery practice
- describes the methods used in the assessment of newborn baby status and knows the risks to newborn baby wellbeing and recognises the abnormalities
- knows how to resuscitate the newborn baby
- is able to observe the early interaction between the parents and newborn baby
- describes the midwifery care principles in the abnormal labour

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student
- describes extensively the knowledge of progression, physiology and mechanism of normal labour and is able to apply it to the midwifery care
- describes and understands the meaning of the labour progression to maternal and foetal wellbeing observation and is able to make conclusions based on the observation
- describes extensively the midwifery care during labour and knows the positive effect of that on the positive birth experience
- knows how to observe and support the early interaction between the parents and newborn baby
- is able to implement the knowledge of normal and abnormal labour to the professional midwifery care
- knows the methods used in the assessment of newborn baby status and the risks to newborn baby wellbeing
- knows how to resuscitate the newborn baby
