Objectives (course unit)
-knows the tasks of Emergency Medical Services as part of patient care chain
- knows the ethical principles of and the legislation governing Emergency Medical Services
- can describe the risks related to occupational safety in EMS and ways to reduce the risks
- can use and maintain patient care and transfer equipment
- can systematically examine the patient and assess the need for treatment
- knows the most important patient care methods
- knows the communication and reporting methods used in EMS
- knows, how genomic information can be utilized in the pharmacotherapy of a first aid patient
- knows the instructions for resuscitation and can act accordingly
- knows the responsibilities and duties related to the safe driving of the emergency vehicle

Content (course unit)
-Emergency medical service (EMS), ethical principles and legislation governing operations
-Patient- and Occupational safety in EMS
-Assessment, treatment, and transfer equipment in EMS
-Patient’s systematic assessment
-Caring protocols for the patient with breathing problems, chest pain, unconsciousness patient, injured-, intoxication- or elderly patient
-The documentation and communication in EMS
-The basics of EMS patient medication
-Resuscitation outside the hospital
-Safe driving of the ambulance
-Emergency care chain and multi-professional collaboration
Prerequisites (course unit)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
-knows the stakeholders of EMS and their tasks.
-acts according to the ethical principles and legislation of EMS
-describes occupational safety risks and uses care and transfer equipment safely
-can assess the care need of EMS patient and initiate the most important treatment procedures under supervision
-identifies the need for urgent patient care, requiring guidance to begin treatment
-knows the basics of communication and reporting methods in EMS
-describes how a patient’s genomic information should be taken into account in the medication of an EMS patient
-know the roles as part of a resuscitation team
-can describe the responsibilities and duties related to the safe driving of an emergency vehicle
-has completed the course assignments on time and they have been approved
-has actively participated and the theory test has been passed.

-can describe the roles, tasks, and goals of emergency care service and emergency care stakeholders’ in the patient care chain
-observes and describes the ethical principles and legislation related to EMS
-identifies occupational safety risks and can justify the safe use of care and transfer equipment
-can provide the systematic patient assessment and initiate the most important treatment procedures
-recognizes the patient’s need for urgent care and can start treatment
-can use EMS communication and reporting methods
-can combine the patient’s genomic information in the implementation of the drug therapy
-can act as a member of a resuscitation team
-can describe the responsibilities and duties related to the safe driving of an emergency vehicle

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
-manages EMS stakeholders and their roles as part of the emergency patient care chain
-knows tasks and goals of the EMS as part of health care
-justifies activities with examples of the ethical principles of the paramedic and the legislation governing the activities, highlighting the duties and responsibilities of the paramedic in the care of the patient
-highlights the risks associate with the care and transfer equipment of the patient, the means of eliminating the risks, and manages the use and maintenance of the equipment
-identifies disorder of the patient’s basic organ function and can initiate basic procedures independently
-adheres to safe and ergonomic work methods in his/her work and can guide his/her fellow students in following these work methods
-the use of EMS communication and reporting methods is clear
-can view a patient’s paramedicine using genomic information
-can act as a member of a resuscitation team
-can describe the responsibilities and duties related to the safe driving of an emergency vehicle
