Objectives (course unit)
The students is able to
- work safely in a training lab
- have the basic working methods to work in experimental and clinical laboratory
- know the legislation and safety instructions governing laboratory work.
- take the sustainable development perspective into consideration.
Content (course unit)
Ergonomics, occupational safety and chemical regulations regarding laboratory work
Basic first aid in laboratory work
Working with written or oral instructions in the laboratory
The biological, physical and chemical hazards associated with laboratory work
Manufacturing and measuring solutions and common methods for transfer and solution analysis
Safety data sheets and their use
Basic equipment of the laboratory
Basic laboratory calculations
Critical evaluation and reporting of results

The number of participants may need to be limited. TAMK's Bioanalyytics Students. Students of biotechnology and TUT biotechnology degree programs are the first choice in the selection of participants.
Teaching Language: Finnish
Obligatory participation in teaching, as well as workshops and work reports.
Examination and approved work reports to be submitted within one month of completion of the job or otherwise re-done.
Teaching Methods : Lectures, working in the Laboratory, Coursework, Personal Occupational Safety exam, and skill test( pair work).
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student
- works responsibly within the group
- performs the tasks according to the instructions given.
- knows on a general level the legislation and safety guidelines governing laboratory work and acts accordingly.
- has performed exercises and group assignments under guidance or assisted by other students.
- passes the course assessments.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student
- works responsibly within the group, gives and receives constructive feedback
- knows on a general level the legislation and safety guidelines governing laboratory work and applies them in their operations.
- works systematically and presents solutions to phenomena and problems
- is self-directed in his/her work, based on the given instructions.
- performs well in assessments.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student
- works responsibly and flexibly within the group.
- implements the principles of giving and receiving constructive feedback and uses it to support their own and their group's professional growth.
- can describe and justify solutions to phenomena and problems
- knows on a general level the legislation and safety instructions governing laboratory work.
- works systematically and in a self-directed way and can justify his/her activities.
- performs well in assessments.

Satisfactory grade criteria are not met or the student has too many absences.
