Objectives (course unit)

The student will
- know the procedure of reliable blood transfusion sampling and be aware of special circumstances concerning blood transfusions
- know the storage and management of transfused blood products
- know how to collect blood samples for blood transfusion serology
- know the most common clinically significant antibodies and adverse effects and dangers related to blood transfusion
- know the responsibility areas of the blood service, hospital blood bank, and nursing unit in implementation of safe blood transfusion
- be able to perform the basic blood transfusion serology tests reliably with tube and column methods
- understand the results of basic blood transfusion serology tests

Prerequisites (course unit)

The student must have passed 7B00BB89 Immunology and Pathology before the course.

Further information (course unit)

The course includes clinical training in the university of applied sciences teaching laboratory.
The participation in all the training lessons is compulsory.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student is able to analyse basic blood transfusion serological tests by tube and column method. The student knows the basics of blood transfusion practices, clinically relevant antibodies, and the adverse effects and incidents related to blood transfusions. The student knows the responsibility areas of the hospital blood centre and the treatment unit in the implementation of safe blood transfusion, the use of various blood products and the instructions for blood transfusion.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student is able to perform basic blood transfusion serological tests according to the working procedure using the tube and column method, taking into account preanalytical factors. The student knows blood transfusion practices, clinically relevant antibodies and blood transfusion adverse effects. The student knows the responsibility areas of the blood service, the hospital blood centre and the treatment unit for the implementation of safe blood transfusion, the use of various blood products and the instructions for blood transfusion.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student is able to perform the basic tests in high quality using the tube and column method, taking into account preanalytical factors, and can reflect on his/her own learning. The student knows blood transfusion practices, clinically relevant antibodies and blood transfusion adverse effects. The student knows the responsibility areas of the blood service, the hospital blood centre and the treatment unit for the implementation of safe blood transfusion, the use of various blood products and the instructions for blood transfusion. The student is able to evaluate the reliability of blood transfusion serology.
