Objectives (course unit)

Student understands the role of simulation and optimization in technical problem solving and design process. The student has ability in building a simulation and optimization model in application areas chosen from mechanical engineering. The student can use a typical simulation program in building and solving a simulation and optimization models. Student also understands the possibilities of simulation in creating cost and resource efficient solutions.

Content (course unit)

User interface and programming environment for a selected simulation program (For example Matlab). Programming language for a selected simulation program.
Building of simulation and optimization models starting from the objectives, design variables and restrictions in design. Programming exercises in selected simulation environment (in Matkab case, Simulink, SimMechanics and Optimization toolbox user interfaces). Analysis of the material and cost effectiveness are also included.

Prerequisites (course unit)

Basic know-how of
- machine design,
- dynamics and statics of rigid bodies,
- strenght of materials

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student identifies the possibilities of machine simulation and the most important basic concepts. The student is aware of the requirements and possibilities of the machine operation simulation process and performs the given simulation tasks with assistance if necessary.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student knows the possibilities of machine simulation and the most important basic concepts. The student is aware of the requirements and possibilities of the machine operation simulation process and performs the given simulation tasks.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student is well versed in all the possibilities of machine simulation and the most important basic concepts. The student is aware of the requirements and possibilities of the machine operation simulation process and performs the given simulation tasks independently.
