Objectives (course unit)
The student
- is prepared to assist with gynaecological examinations, guidance on breast palpation and addressing sexual health issues
- is able to apply the theoretical knowledge of maternity care to the pregnancy care process and is prepared to guide the family
- is able to work appropriately in an out-of-hospital delivery
-is prepared to guide breast-feeding using evidence-based knowledge
- knows the basic care and monitoring of a newborn and is prepared to guide the family in the care of a healthy newborn
- is able to reflect on his/her own professional skills
Content (course unit)
- assisting in gynaecological examinations, breast palpation
- the pregnancy treatment process, with a case example
- assistance in childbirth outside the hospital
- monitoring and daily care of a healthy newborn
- breastfeeding and parental guidance in the daily care of the newborn
- Independent study: Baby Bakery — delivery game
Prerequisites (course unit)
First year studies 50 ects completed, including the course on Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations.
Participation in courses on Maternity Care and Gynaecological Nursing.

Location and time
Orientation to this course is on the Maternity care and Gynaecological Nursing theory course's orientation in January. Attendance to orientation is required, without attendance you will not be allowed to participate.

Assessment methods and criteria
In order to pass, the student must attend 100% actively in the skills station(s), and complete the learning game Baby Bakery. The game needs to be completed before attending the skills station as guided in the orientation lesson. To prepare for the game, read literature of normal childbirth.

Teaching methods
Skills station, practicing together and completing a learning game (Baby Bakery). The student needs to play the entire game and bring a picture of pictures of all completed cases to the skills station to show to teacher as evidence.
In order to take part in this course, the Maternity care and Gynaecological Nursing theory course needs to be completed or under completion.
Learning materials
Same literature as the Maternity care and Gynaecological Nursing theory course.
Student workload
Orientation to Clinical Training, Maternity Care and Gynaecological Nursing is 27 hours; it includes contact skills station (8 hours) and independent studies (19 hours). Participating actively in skills stations is 100% compulsory. Completing all cases of the learning game Baby Bakery is also compulsory. The skills station content is included in the Maternity Care and Gynaecological Nursing theory course exam. The independent studies include the learning game and studying for the theory course exam.
NOTE! Take the theory course exam only after completing these skills stations!

If you are not able to participate in orientation or skills station, you need to participate with another group or course.
