Objectives (course unit)
The student
- is able to care for an acutely ill child and his/ her family outside the hospital
- masters the essential emergency procedures and is able to provide life-saving emergency care for children
- is able to examine children of different ages and interpret the symptoms they present
- improves his/her knowledge of children's fluid and drug treatment outside the hospital
- is able to support the family of a dying child
- is able to apply the ethical principles of nursing in child and family care and utilises researched data.

- the principles of children's medication and fluid therapy
- examining a child outside the hospital pain treatment of a child outside the hospital
- respiratory problems of a child

- children’s poisoning
- violence against a child
- child convulsions
- emergency care for a child with fluid loss (iv, io, naso-gastric)

Prerequisites (course unit)
At the beginning of Advanced Level Emergency Care studies, the student must have completed 135 credits of studies. These should include The Basic Level Emergency Care Skills, as well as studies in Anatomy and Physiology. Courses on Paediatric Nursing must be completed.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student
- identifies the evidence-based knowledge for paediatrics and children’s and adolescents’ nursing care; understands the special features of paediatric emergency care
- performs correctly medication calculations and knows the basics of children's medication and fluid therapy.
- knows the changes in a child’s status in acute care situations
-recognises guidance as an important method of child care in emergency situations
- recognises the importance of ethical principles in emergency care for children and families
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student
- knows the specifics of emergency care for children and adolescents and knows how to use evidence-based knowledge in emergency care for children
- performs correctly medication calculations and masters the basics of children's medication and fluid therapy
- knows the changes in a child's status in acute situations and is able to describe the chosen care protocols, giving reasons for his/her choices
- understands and is able to apply ethical principles in emergency care for children and families
- knows the importance of guidance in different situations in emergency care
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student
- is able to utilise extensively knowledge based on paediatric nursing and paediatrics
- knows the changes in a child's status in acute situations and is able to explain in detail the care choices in emergency situations
- performs correctly medication calculations and masters the basics of children's medication and fluid therapy; is able to implement the medication and fluid therapy in emergency care
- understands and is able to apply the ethical principles of nursing in different situations, with children of different ages
- is able to guide the child and family in a client-oriented manner
