Objectives (course unit)

The student
- knows extensively the content of pre-pregnancy guidance
- has the extensive knowledge of pregnancy and its physiology and hormonal processes
- has the knowledge of evidence based midwifery for pregnancy planning and confirming, prenatal care including the screening methods of normal pregnancy
- has the knowledge of prenatal care for foetal and maternal wellbeing and the detection of abnormalities
- knows how to support the positive pregnancy experience for women
- is able to plan the parental and birth education for groups
- has the knowledge of preparing process for parenthood and knows how to support the life changes

Content (course unit)

- pre-pregnancy health promotion
- normal progression of pregnancy and support of physiological processes
- methods of foetal and maternal wellbeing screening and support
- guidance of pregnant women and their families
- family benefits and maternal care services
- prenatal screening and their guidance
- psychology of parenthood
- parental and birth education
- substance addictions during pregnancy
- medication during pregnancy

Prerequisites (course unit)

The student must have completed 135 credits of nursing studies including Anatomy and Physiology and courses of Perioperative Nursing, Maternity Care and Gynaecological Nursing. Supervised clinical training could not be started before completing all theoretical and clinical nursing studies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student
- has the knowledge of pre-pregnancy guidance
- knows the pregnancy progression and physiology and its hormonal processes
- is able to describe the evidence-based pre-pregnancy and antenatal midwifery
- is able to describe the antenatal assessment of maternal and foetal wellbeing and the detection of abnormalities
- knows how to support the positive pregnancy experience for women
- knows the principles of parental and birth group education planning and guidance
- has the knowledge of preparing process for parenthood and knows how to support the life changes

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student
- has the knowledge of pre-pregnancy guidance and its customer oriented implementation
- knows the pregnancy progression and physiology and its hormonal processes
- is able to parse and combine different point of views to the evidence-based pre-pregnancy and antenatal midwifery
- has the knowledge of antenatal assessment of maternal and foetal wellbeing and the detection of abnormalities
- knows how to support positive pregnancy experience for women
- knows the principles of parental and birth group education planning and guidance
- has the knowledge of preparing process for parenthood and the principles of life changes support
- is able to choose the methods of parental guidance and is able to justify the selection

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student
- has the extensive knowledge of pre-pregnancy guidance and its customer oriented implementation
- knows the pregnancy progression and physiology and its hormonal processes and is able to combine the knowledge of different disciplines situationally
- is able to parse and analyse different point of views to evidence-based pre-pregnancy and antenatal midwifery
- has the knowledge of antenatal assessment of maternal and foetal wellbeing, the detection of abnormalities and the prevention of complications
- knows how to support the positive pregnancy experience, sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing of families by utilising different methods
- is able to implement and justify creative use of different methods of guidance for the families and parent and birth education groups
- knows how to support parenthood and life changes in the customer oriented way and is able to identify the signs of danger
