Objectives (course unit)

The student
- knows the phases of surgical patient
- understands the process of surgical patient
- knows the main surgical illnesses and their effects on the patient's health, daily survival and the significant others
- is able to guide surgical patient and his/her family member in different stages on nursing process using evidence based knowledge
- masters the main interventions of pre- and postoperative nursing care
- is able to document and inform securing the continuity of care.

- praparation for surgery
- preoperative and postoperative observation and care
- observation and care of the patient in plaster
- pain treatment of postoperative patient
- treatment of a surgical wound
- parenteral nutrition
- special characteristics of care and support for a cancer patient and his/her significant others
- nursing care of a tracheostomised patient
- nursing care of a stoma patient
- special characteristics of an elderly surgical patient

Prerequisites (course unit)

50 ects of first year studies completed, including Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student
- is aware of the steps of the surgical patient's care path and the nursing process
-knows the most important illnesses requiring surgical treatment and their impact on the patient's health
- is able to guide a surgical patient and his / her significant others at different phases of the care process
- knows the essential nursing interventions for a patient's pre- and postoperative care
- knows the importance of documentation and oral reporting in patient care

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student
- knows the steps of the surgical patient's care path
- knows the nursing process of a surgical patient
- knows the most important illnesses requiring surgical treatment and their impact on the patient's health and coping with daily life, as well as their effect on the patient’s significant others
- know how to guide a surgical patient and his / her significant others at different phases of the care process
- masters the essential nursing interventions of a patient’s pre- and postoperative care
- knows the importance of documentation and oral reporting in patient care

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student
- knows the phases of the surgical patient's care path at different levels of health care
- knows the nursing process of a surgical patient
- knows the most important illnesses requiring surgical treatment and understands their impact on the patient's health and coping with daily life, as well as their effect on the patient’s significant others
- is able to guide in a patient-centered manner the surgical patient and his / her significant other at different phases of the care process using evidence-based knowledge
- masters the key nursing interventions of a patient's pre- and postoperative care and understands the cause and effect relationships involved
- understands the importance of documentation and oral reporting in patient care
